AVERT, formerly resident of Columbia county, and late a member of the Clinch Rifles, now stationed at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. He departed this life under circumstances which will be painful to the feelings of his brother soldiers and numerous friends. A letter dated 17-th inst., from the Surgeon of the 5th Georgia Regiment, to which the Rifles are attached, states that for want of proper accommodations he was compelled to send off many of the sick, and that eight of the Clinch were to leave for Augusta on that day. Of this number, the deceased was included, who reached this place by the Saturday evening train, and, as stated, expired the next morning, The writer met with young Avery at Atlanta, Jan. the 18th ult., apparently in fine health, when the Regiment passed from Pensacola, Fla., through that city. He was said to be an admirable soldier possessing qualities, which rendered him highly esteemed. His remains were conducted to the Sunday afternoon train, to be conveyed, under an escort of his former comrades, to Thomson, Ga., near which place be was to be Interred. Thus has still another Volunteer fallen in defence of his invaded country. Augusta, March 24, 1862.
