Atkinson, 87, of Adel died at Memorial Convalescent Center of Adel. Born July 17, 1921 to the late George and Edna McCutheon Atkinson, he served in the United States Army during WWII. Before retiring, he was manage of Sherwin-Williams Paint Store. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Mack and Shirley Atkinson of AL and Rev. Jack and Sharon Atkinson of Adel; sister, Edna Lusk of AL; five grandchildren, Gina Prinkey of Adel, Jay Atkinson of AL., Lt. Col. Hugh Atkinson of Okinawa, Japan, Jarrett Atkinson of Memphis, TN., and Preston Atkinson of Copperas Cove, TX; 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Dark Atkinson and four brothers. Funeral services were held November 28 at First United Methodist Church in Sylacauga with the Revs. Stephen McWhorter and Byron White officiating. Entombment followed in Evergreen Mausoleum. Serving as active pallbearers were Jay Atkinson, Jarrett Atkinson, Preston Atkinson, Tim Posey, Randy Lusk, Greg Atkinson and Lt. Col. Hugh Lynn Atkinson. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Johnson and Harry Vaughn. Purvis FUneral Home in Adel was in charge of local arrangements.
