She was born Feb. 26, 1916 in Clinch County to the late Henry Thaddeus and Viola Pierce Hughes and lived most of her life in Cook County. She was a homemaker and member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Carroll "J.C." Godwin Sr. She is survived by one son and daughter in law, Joe Carroll Jr. and Marie Godwin of Lenox; four daughters and sons in law, Melba and Talley Hancock, Lenox, Zel Thorne, Jonesboro, Janette C. Womack, Lenox, Judy and Tony Stracke, Adel; grandchildren, Dale and Lola Hancock, Brenda and Shane Atwell, David and Carolyn Howell, all of Lenox, Christy and Kevin Wright, Fayetteville, Joe Lance, Sr., and Janet Godwin, Sparks, Lisa and Steve Simmons, Lenox, Jana and Ronnie Williams, Lenox, Tim and Lucretia Womack, Alpharetta, Tina and Steve Bullard, Valdosta; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Brevigg of Valdosta. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma Nell Godwin; one sister, Versey Bennett; and two brothers, Walter Leon Hughes and Henry T. Hughes, Jr. Funeral services were held April 18 at 11 a.m. at Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dillard Ensley and Jimmy Parker officiating. Jack and Betty Joiner sang "Amazing Grace," "Go Rest High on That Mountain," and "What Will I Leave Behind?" Interment was in Brushy Creek Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Bobby Hancock, Bradley Werho, John Hancock, Jason Godwin, Jamey Godwin, David Lee Howell. Honorary pallbearers were members of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home of Adel was in charge of arrangements.
