WALT VINING 1909 – 1967 The Rev. Walter Lafayette Vining 58, of Adel Ga, died of a heart attack Wednesday Oct. 25 at his home after a long illness. The Rev. Mr. Vining was a well known, retired minister. Mr. Vining was born in Coffee County and had lived in Cook County for 20 years. He was the son of Owen Frank Vining and Pearl Woodard Vining. Mr. Vining was a member of Tanner Baptist Church of Coffee County. Survivors include his wife: Lela Spivey Vining, 1 son: Gene Vining of Douglasville, 1 daughter: Betty Stewart of Adel; 4 brothers: Earl Vining of Pearson, Leon Vining of Ambrose, Woodard Vining of Alaska, and Sonny Vining of Adel. 5 sisters: Maysie Leavens of Adel, Sue Nell Vining of Jacksonville Fla, May Ellen Sanders of Ft Pierce Fla, Margaret Howard of Ft Pierce Fla, and Mary Harper of Douglas. 2 Grandchildren: Karen Vining of Douglasville and Kathy Vining of Adel. Funeral services are to be held Friday at 3 pm at Tanner Holiness Baptist Church in Coffee County. The Rev. Fred Hesters of Nashville, and the Rev. John Futch of Homerville are to conduct the rites. Boone Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Additional Comments: Mr. Vining was a primative baptist, a missionary baptist and also a holiness baptist at different times during his ministry. He was an active member of the Original Smyrna Missionary Baptist Association for many years. He was a man totally dedicated to his religion and serving the word of god to all. Mr. Vining was called to pastor BEULAH Baptist Church in the late forties, he pastored there for 15 years. Many years he pastored 4 churches at the same time, visiting each church one scheduled sunday of each month. These were small country churches and only had services one sunday a month. He would go whatever distance to reach the churches that requested his services. He also ministered on the radio and would stop by the radio stations on sunday mornings to preach prior to attending church. WAAG in Adel and WDMG in Douglas were those radio stations. He was requested to preach and assist at many funerals and weddings. He visited the homes of the sick and prayed for them. Often times couples dropped by his home requesting he perform their marriage ceremony right then. He also pastored churches in South Carolina and in Florida in his early ministry. Mr. Vining liked to hunt and fish, when he had leisure time you would most likely find him down on the river bank. There was nothing better to him than a good mess of fish. He was a carpenter by trade and built many homes in the Adel area including his. He retired from active ministry in the mid sixties after his health began to fail.
