Directions >From Newnan, travel southeast on Gordon Road. Go 1.1 miles pass Pleasant Hill Church, crossing Luther Bailey/Bethel Church Road and turn right onto a field road for 4/10 of a mile. The last 1/10th has to be walked because of a high ridge. As of July 2000, there was a chain across the entrance to the field road. The land the cemetery is on is owned by Diane (Estes) McKinney-Fannin, daughter of William "Bill" Estes (July 2000). The following was recorded in the book, "Coweta Co., Georgia Cemeteries," c. 1986 by the Coweta County Genealogical Society, pg. 100: Unknown Cemetery #143 "Mrs. Linda Denney told Mr. Haney Summers (he is now deceased - v.j.f.) about this and carried us to the cemetery on April 9, 1981. There was a huge granite boulder near by. There was only one grave, it was marked with one of the CSA stones: Nixon, Samuel - Co. F 4th Ga. Reserves CSA. There were at least 12 fieldstones with 3 of them appearing to have been carved on. Could not read them; dusting did not help. Estate settled 1900. Heirs included H.H. Nixon, W.B. (W.H?? Walter Harrison?) Nixon, Hosea Grey, Ida Grey, & Rebecca Grey." - - - - - - - - - - - Obituary "The Herald & Advertiser" Newnan, Georgia (Coweta Co.) Friday, February 3, 1899 issue "Mr. Samuel Mixon, an aged and respected citizen of Coweta County, residing near Haralson, died Wednesday morning, after a protracted illness. The bereaved family and relatives have our sincere sympathy." (Note - it was mis-spelled with an "M" not an "N" in the obituary - v.j.f) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Survey done on 1 August 2000 by Maynard E. Young, Jr. & Wilbur G. Nixon, Jr., 2nd cousins once-removed and direct descendants of Joseph & Martha (Ward) Nixon. Per Maynard: "Wilbur and I had a marvelous afternoon. We went down to the "chain road". Wilbur found the area of the graves of Joseph and Martha, and I found at least three adult graves and two child graves. We had to leave because it started RAINING. The loggers had obliterated the graves and moved or destroyed Samuel Nixon's Confederate marker. We are going to go back down there and mark them better. I think we should put some type of permanent markers there, making some assumptions based on what Grandma (Alice Pearl [Nixon] Horton) told me. Also, who do you think the two children might be?? Children of Joseph and Martha?? Didn't they have two die very young, or we can't find two in any later record?? Maynard - - - - - - - - - Follow up from 10 August 2000 Hi, Just got back from Coweta Co. We marked the graves with pressure-treated Wooden stakes; put wooden temporary markers on Joseph's, Martha's, and Samuel's graves; also marked the two child's graves with stakes; and put up a temporary sign that says "Joseph Nixon Cemetery". Made pictures of all of it with both Wilbur and myself there. Then, had a wonderful Sprayberry supper with Pat, Phil, and Wilbur.
