June 4, 1977 Dear Dr. Ervin: Since I have had time to look up some records, I thought you might be traveling this summer and if I give you a little information, you might be able to look up records. The Addy family are descended from John Simons Addy and wife Catherine who came to U.S. from Holland just before the Revolutionary War and settled in South Carolina. Jessie Addy, who is the ancestor of all the Addys in Georgia and in Texas, was born in South Carolina. I have the date of his birth, when he came to Georgia, when he came to Texas, etc. He was married twice. My mother was one of the second set of children. I am a retired teacher. After my husband's death it was too hard to attend all the business and teach, I have lived a very busy life. After I retired, I went to Georgia to find her relatives I knew very little about. I have a B.S. degree in Art, a B.S. degree in Education, an M.S. or master's degree in education and psychology and have done one year of work toward a doctor's degree in education and psychology. A few years ago I was in Europe, and when I was in Holland I came in contact with the name Addy, but didn't get any information. The invitation still stands for you to visit me. I will be glad for you to copy the information I have, and I can give a lot orally. My Mother's brother, Dr. John Addy [actually half-brother - vjf], established a clinic in Atlanta which has developed in that well know research clinic in Atlanta. All Addys in the United States I know anything about are from this family. I also have the genealogy of the wives of each. Isadore Addy and her sister who live in Senoia gave me some information. I have had letters from Rufus Addy's granddaughter, who lives in Camden, Arkansas. He was my mother's half brother. I know what relations all the different ones are. If I can help you find out what you want to know I will be glad to do so. I write for papers and magazines, which keeps me busy, besides the traveling around I do. Sincerely, Clara Williams Shaw P.S. My mother was Mary Jane Addy Williams. Additional Comments: Dr. Ervin Addy is a descendant of Jacob Addy, brother to Jesse Addy. They both migrated to Georgia from South Carolina. The writer of this letter, Mrs. Clara (Williams) Shaw, passed away 20 Oct 1991. Dr. Addy passed away in May 2002. They both resided in Texas. * Notes for Jesse Addy:From "A History of Coweta County, Georgia," compiled and written by The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society; © 1988; Wolfe Publishing - Fernandina Beach, FL, pg. 189: Addy-Morgan "Jessie Addy, along with his brother Jacob, and sister Mrs. Zeno Swygert, came to Coweta County with their parents, John Simeon and Catherine Page Addy, from Lexington District, South Carolina. Jessie married Mary Summer, whose parents lived on the old Gordon Road between Newnan and Haralson." [Note: I do not believe Jesse's parents came with them. I believe they remained in SC. Also, Mrs. Zeno Swygert is Mittie Ann Addy. vjf] * per FamilySearch.org/IGI Jesse ADDY Sex: M Event(s): Birth: 17 Apr 1809 Lexington, South Carolina Parents: Father: John Simeon ADDY Mother: Catherine TAYLOR * 1850 Census - Meriwether Co., GA, Division #59; pg. 404B 26 Nov 1850; family #1412-1412, start @ line #20-28 attnd sch Addy Jesse 41 M F 2,000 SC Addy Mary M. 39 F SC Addy William H. 16 M F SC Addy John J. 15 M SC Addy Marcella C. 13 F SC X Addy Reuben L. 10 M SC X Addy Epsy 8 F SC X Addy Jasper H. 7 M SC Addy David F. 5 M SC They are living next door to the Shadrach VanSant family and also the James Turner family, who all were originally from South Carolina.
