Wallace of Coweta County, Georgia Indigent Pension 1897 John Wallace, Coweta County, Georgia Questions for Applicant State of Georgia, Coweta County John Wallace of said State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act approved Dec 15th 1894, hereby submits his proofs and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? John Wallace, residence at Newnan Coweta Co. GA 2. Where did you reside on January 1st 1894 and how long have you been a resident of this state? Coweta County; and in the State since 1845. 3. When and where were you born? Chester Dist. South Carolina in 1834 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? Co K 56th Regt GA Vols July 1862 Heard County GA 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Three years from enlistment until close of the war. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? About three years 7. When where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I was in the service when the war closed. 8. What is your present occupation? Farming 9. How much can you earn gross per annum by your own exertion or labor? $15. (Fifteen Dollars) 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming until about 4 years ago when I became so broken down that I quit farming and now living with our children. 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz; age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or blindness and poverty? Age, infirmity and poverty. 12. How long have you been in such condition that you could not earn your support? I am 62 years old and am worn out and broken down in health and with hardly any appetite and weak and hardly any vitality about me at all and not able to work more than about 1/4 of what a good common hand could work and not able to make a support by my own labor of any kind. 13. What property effects or income do you possess and its gross value? None at all. I am a renter and have been ever since the war. 14. What property effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did you make of same? None. 15. In what county did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? Coweta. 16. How were you supported during the years 1895 and 1896? By the labor of myself and my children. Myself and wife lived with our married children and they supported us, not requiring any labor of me at all. I only worked when I felt like it and that was very seldom. My labor contributed not over one fourth of the expense of my support. 17. How much did your support cost for those years and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own income or labor? $50. 0 contributed. 18. What was your employment in 1895 and 1896? None at all. No pay except as stated above. 19. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family, give their means of support; have they a homestead?: I have a wife as old as myself and not able to work. My children are all married and off to themselves. They are all renters with no homestead and no means of support but their own labor. 20. Are you receiving any pension, if so what amount and for what disability? Peddy of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of John Wallace for pension and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and anwsers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? G.W. Peddy residing at Newnan Coweta County GA 2. Are you acquainted with John Wallace the applicant, if so, how long have you known him? Yes for 40 years. 3. Where does he reside and how long has he been a resident of this state? Coweta Co. 4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate Army or the Georgia Militia? How do you know this? Yes, in Confederate Army. I was there and saw him. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? in Franklin Heard County GA in Co. K 56 GA Regt. July 1862. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes 7. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate Soldier and the time and circumstances of his discharge from service? From July 1862 until close of War. He made a fair soldier and was there when war closed. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant; give your means of knowledge: Nothing at all. I have known his circumstances ever since the war. 9. What property effects or income did the applicant possess in 1895 and 1896 and what disposition if any did he make of same? None 10. What is the applicant's occupation? Farmer 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so why? Unable to support himself by labor of any sort on account of not being physically able to work. 12. How was he supported during the years 1895 and 1896? He has been supported for the last 4 or 5 years by his children. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? He was not able to make more than 1/4 of his support. 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension under the act of December 15th 1894: He is so infirm and poor that he is unable to earn a support by his own labor for himself. Orlando McLendon, Ordinary Affadavit of Physician State of Georgia, Coweta County Personally came before nem R.L.Y. Lang and G.W. Peddy, both known to me as reputable physicians of said County who being severally sworn say on oath that they have examined carefully John Wallace, applicant for pension under the Act of 1894 and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Debilitated and weak and of such a low state of vitality that he cannot work or labor to do any good. He has been in that condition for several years and he is very infirm. We further say on oath that the physical condition of applicant renders him unable to labor at any work or calling sufficient to earn a support for himself. G.W. Peggy, M.D., R.S.Y. Orlando McLendon, Ordinary January 4, 1900 For Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia, Coweta County Personally appears, J.T. Wallace of Coweta County, State of Georgia who being duly sworn, says on oath that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said County and State and has resided in said State continuously ever since December 1845; that he is 65 years old and by occupation a Farmer; that his physical condition is as follows: Broke down in health, worn out and no vitality which renders him unable to work sufficiently to earn a support. Deponent desires to participate in the benefit of the Act of December 15th 1894 and the Acts amendatory thereof and makes application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year 1900; and has heretofore been a resident of Coweta County and allowed a pension for the year 1899. Similar affadavits/declarations filed in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907. July 26, 1911 State of Georgia, Coweta County Widow's Application for Pension Ann E. Wallace, widow of John T. Wallace, a soldier in Co K 56th GA Widow's Affadavit Personally appeared, Ann E. Wallace of said County, who after being duly sworn on oath says that she is the widow of J.T. Wallace to whom in the County of Heard, State of GA she was married on the 8th day of Jan 1857 and that she remained his wife and resided with him to the date of his death in July 1911 and that she has not since his death remarried. At the time of his death he was a resident of Coweta County in the State of Georgia and he was on the Indigent Pension Roll in the State and was paid a pension of $60. per annum on account of being a soldier in Co K 56 Regiment GA Volunteers. At the death of J.T. Wallace he was in the use and possession of the following property: 1 mule, 1 wagon, 1 buggy and household goods at the cash value of $175. That she is now a bona fide resident of said County of Coweta and she has so continuously resided since the 1st day of Jan 1900. Ann E. Wallace, X, her mark Sworn to and subscribed before me this 26 day of July 1911. L A Perdue, Ordinary of Coweta County Affadavit of Witnesses Georgia, Coweta County Personally appeared, Dr. G.W. Peddy, a reputable citizen of said county who being duly sworn says that he has known J.T. Wallace and Ann E. Wallace as man and wife for the past thirty years or more. He swears that he first knew them as man and wife in Heard County, GA over thirty years ago and that they have lived together as man and wife fromt that time up to the date of the death of the said J.T. Wallace which occurred in the month of July 1911 in the County of Coweta. " I was called in to see him in the capacity of physician a day or two before he died and I saw him last the day before he died. G.W. Simms, a truthful and reputable citizen of said county who being duly sworn says: "I have known J.T. Wallace, late of Coweta County, GA deceased, and his wife Ann. E. Wallace for nearly fifty years; have known them as man and wife for this period. They lived together as man and wife to my certain knowledge for this period and up to the death of the said J.T. Wallace which happened in Coweta County, GA on the 12th day of July 1911. I further swear that the records of the County of Heard in said State were destroyed by fire some years since and that J.T. Wallace and Ann E. Davis were married in the said County of Heard. John D. Simms (signature of witness) Sworn to and subscribed before me this July 27th 1911. L A Perdue, Ordinary, Coweta County, GA July 31, 1911 Affadavit of Two Freeholders State of Georgia, Coweta County Personally appeared, J.B. Hutchins and F.M. Bryant who after being sworn on oath say that they are Freeholders of said County and State and that they know Ann E. Wallace of said County and that they knew J.T. Wallace at the time of his death on July 12, 1911 who was in the possession and control of the following property at his death: 1 mule, 1 wagon, 1 buggy and household goods of the value of about $175. Wallace died Nov 6, 1927 without sufficient property to pay costs for funeral expenses Newnan, GA Nov 8, 1927 Mrs. Ann E. Wallace, Deceased, in account with J.U. McKoon Funeral Director and Embalmer 30 Court Square Telephone 100 Nov 6 - - Casket and Service $100 Nov 15, 1927 State of Georgia, Coweta County Personally before the Ordinary of Said County, comes C.I. Wallace of said County who after being duly sworn on oath says that he knew Mrs. A.E. Wallace of said County and that she was on the Widow's Pension Roll of Coweta County at the time of her death which occurred in Coweta County on the 6th day of Nov 1927 and that a pension of $50. (Fifty) dollars was her and unpaid at the time of her death. That she left no estate of any value sufficient to pay her funeral expenses which amounted to the sum of $100. dollars as per sworn statment, itemized, hereto attached. C.I. Wallace Sworn to and subscribed before me this 15th day of Novv 1927. J.A.R. Camp, Ordinary of Coweta County Affidavit of Ordinary Georgia, County of Coweta I, J.A.R. Camp, Ordinary of said County, do certify that I personally know C.I. Wallace who is a resident citizen of said County and that he is of a truthful and trustworthy character entitled to full faith and credit. I also knew Mrs. A.E. Wallace while in life; that she was the same person whose name appears on the Widow's Pension Roll of Coweta County and was paid a pension of One Hundred Fifty dollars in said County for 1927 and I now believe her to be dead.
