Lewis J.C. Lewis, Co. B 26th GA Dec 12, 1899 State of Georgia, Coweta County Questions for Applicant J.C. Lewis of said County and State and County, desiring to avail himself of the Pension Act hereby submits his proofs and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? J.C. Lewis, Newnan, Georgia 2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this state? 54 years, all my life. 3. When and where were you born? 1845 July 22, Meriwether Co. GA. 4. When and where and in what company and regiment did you enlist or serve? 1863 in the Spring, Greenville, GA, Company B Reg. 26th GA Battalion 5. How long did you remain in such company and regiment? Until the close of the war, about two years. 6. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? About 2 years. 7. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? 1865 at Columbus GA at close of the war. 8. What is your present occupation: Farming. 9. How much can you earn gross per annum by your own exeritions and labor? $30. 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming. 11. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension, viz: age and poverty, infirmity and poverty or blindness and poverty? (not answered) 12. How long have you been in such condition that you could not earn your support? I have Rheumatism all the while; contracted it during the war; and for several months immediately after the war I was protrated in bed from its effects. Have never fully recovered and as I grow older it gets worse. 13. What property, effects or income do you possess and it's gross value? Nothing but a little household goods. 14. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897 and 1898 and what disposition of any did you make of same? I had nothing these years except my household goods, a cow and a few hogs. I had to sell my cow and the hogs I killed to eat. 15. In what County did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? Coweta. 16. How you were supported during the years 1898 and 1898? By my labor and the labor of my son who has since left me. 17. How much did your support cost for each of those years and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? About $75. I contributed about half. 18. What was your employment during 1897 and 1898 and what pay did you receive in each year? Not answered. 19. Have you a family? If so, who composes such family? Give their means of support. Have they a homestead? I have only myself and one daughter 15 years of age. I have no homestead. 20. Perdue, Ordinary of Coweta County Dec 19, 1899 Georgia, Meriwether County Statement of Witness J.S. Wyche My name is J.S. Wyche and I reside in Meriwether County, GA. I am acquainted with J.C. Lewis and I have known him since 1863. He resides in Coweta County, GA and has resided in this State ever since I have known him. He enlisted in Co. B 26th GA Bat. in Dalton, GA in the Fall of 1863. I know because I was there in the service at that time. I was a member of the same Co. and Bat. He remained in the service until the war was ended. He made a good soldier and was always faithful to duty and was not discharged until close of war. I have no interest in the recovery of a pension by applicant. J.S. Wyche Sworn to and subscribed before me Dec 19th 1899. A.J. Hinton, Ordinary May 16, 1900 Georgia, Coweta County Personally appeared, J.F. Gaston who on oath says he is well acquainted with J.C. Lewis the applicant for pension, having known him about 12 years. He lives now very near and is a very poor and infirm man. He labors as best he can by the job or piece and has to take his time. H e is not able to do half a days work at the time. When he lavors for an hour or so he is so nearly exhausted that ht takes him some time to get able to work again. He suffers much from rheumatism. He has no property and no family to help him earn a support. J.F. Gaston Sworn to and subscribed before me this 16 May 1900. LA Perdue, Ordinary Aug 21, 1900 Questions for Witness State of Georgia, Coweta County J.A. Sibley of said State and County having been presented as a witness in support of the application of J.C. Lewis for pension and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions deposes and answers as follows: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? My name is J.A. Sibley. I reside at St. Charles, Coweta Co. GA. 2. Are you acquainted with J.C. Lewis the applicant; if so how long have you known him? I am acquainted; have known him since 1863. 3. Where does he reside and how long and since when has he been a resident of this State? He resides at Newnan, Coweta Co. GA; been in state since 1863. 4. When where and in what company and regiment did he enlist and how do you know? Enlisted in the Spring of 1863 in Co. B 26 GA Battallion. 5. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? i was a member of both Co. and Reg. 6. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate solder and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? He performed regular military duty to the close of the war. He made a good soldier. He was discharged at Columbus GA at the end of the war. Questions # 7 through 15 not answered. Signed, J.A. Beavers, both known to me as reputable citizens of Coweta County who after being duly sworn depose and say: We know J.C. Lewis the applicant for pension. We have known him ever since he was a boy. We have lived near him and been his neighbors for the past twenty years. He has no property now nor has he had within the past ten years. Jos. H. Moore, W.H. LA Perdue, Ordinary, Coweta County, Georgia Sept 12, 1902 Affadavit of Physician State of Georgia, Coweta County Personally came before me, E.L. Baker, M .D. and W.A. Turner both known to me as reputable physicians of said County who being severally sworn on oath, say that they have examined carefully J.C. Lewis, applicant for pension and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Has muscular and articular Rheumatism in left arm, shoulder and wrist, also in back and in left high and leg contracted in Confederate Army.
