Company A 12th Georgia Battalion Georgia Light Artillery Company A, 12th Georgia Battalion (Newnan Artillery) Roster of Company A 12th Georgia Battalion Capt. James W. Anderson This company was made up of men from Coweta County and the surrounding area. It was known as the "Newnan Artillery" and was designated as Company A at the reorganization of December 1862. The primary source for the following information is the Compiled Service Records, GA Dept. of Archives and History, drawer 254 boxes 31-35, with additional information from the records of the Soldier Roster Commission, GA Dept. of Archives and History, RG-58-2-26 box 83 Loc. 3297-15. Information was also taken from private letters, county histories, and local newspapers when available. PR indicates information taken from pension records. Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Wounded Monocacy, MD 7/9/64, wounded & Captured 3/25/65 Fort Stedman near Petrsburg, VA, in Lincoln Hospital Washington D.C. 6/12/65. 1850 Census list A.W. Alexander age 28, a clerk born S.C., living Coweta Co in the household of Joseph Y. Alexander, a Clergyman. PR Widow Anna E. Alexander applied 4/7/91 Coweta Co. She stated that William was wounded in the hip at Monocacy, MD 7/9/64, and died at Newnan 7/24/68 from the wound. He suffered severe pain all that time and was never able to sit up straight or ride horseback. They married 2/15/57. Witness' J.W. Anderson, Y. Thompson, and W.W. Williams stated that the wound was the cause of death. Also certified by a pysician. Alexander Thomas G., Sgt. Alexander 10/31/69 in Mariwether Co. Thomas died Senoia, GA 2/21/86. Witness Alvin D. Freeman stated that he and Thomas were both present at the Appomattox surrender. Simmons, and stated that both he and Simmons were wounded at Hatcher's Run 2/5/65, and that both were sent to Jackson Hospital at Richmond, and that Simmons was too badly wounded to leave the hospital when he, Austin, returned to the command. Both witness' were present at the surrender, and verify that T.S. Ball was present. He was turned down for a pension in 1902, and this made him so angry, that he refused to ever reapply. In 1908, a large group of his friends petitioned the state on his behalf, asking that he be allowed the pension that he deserved. They moved to Carroll Co 11/4/08. Emily Applied Carroll Co 8/31/20. Gun shot wound rt thigh and fractured ankle Monocacy, MD. Limps badly from wound, also blind in rt eye. Has wife and one child 5 years old. Witness' J.W. Anderson and J.E. Robinson. Neither witness' nor Barnes were present at surrender. Robinson was with Barnes at Point Lookout POW Camp, and remained with him after release from Point Lookout in 3/65, they were both on the way to join the command at the time of the surrender. Bates Thomas K., Cpl., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Promoted Cpl 6/24/63, Wounded 7/9/64 Monocacy MD. and Captured, Exchanged 9/30/64. 1850 Census list a Thomas Bates age 20, a laborer, living with Michael O'Bryan, a Railroad Contractor. Beadles Edwin James, Pvt., Enlisted 1/1/64, Newnan, Furlough from hospital 11/1/64, at home on furlough at end of war. 1850 Census list James E. Beaddles age 4 living Coweta Co in the household of Joseph Beaddles. Also in same household Joseph and William. PR Applied Coweta Co 9/4/89. Resident of GA since birth, 2/28/46. Became sick with acute Pneumonia and hemridge of lungs 7/64. His condition Phthesis Pulmonaris was certified by a physician. E.J. states "I was sent to hospital at Harrisonburg, VA in Aug. or Jul. of 1864 as unfit for service, was discharged by board at West Point, GA. Now 43 years of age, occupation teaching, calling ministry." His Grandfather on Mother's side was an Austin. Brother Joe Nat Beadles was killed at Frederick City. Brother William S. Beadles lost a leg which was amputated at Frederick hospital, and he had further work done in hospital at Atlanta after the War, William died at age 52. Sister W.F. Summers lives 7 miles from Newnan and is 47 years of age. E.J. was married 12/22/75 Caddo Parish LA. E.J. moved to Walton Co. and transferred his pension to that county 2/24/91. Widow Mrs. Josie F. Beadles living Winder, Barrow Co, GA 9/1/19, E.J.Beadles died Monroe, Walton Co, GA 7/12/97, Widow states that he left unit due to sickness 7/64, and was on Provost duty at Newnan at close fo war. Josephine Frances Beadles died in Walton Co. 2/12/36, her Father was Thomas Baldwin. She is buried in Monroe City Cemetery. Witness' H.E. Stokes, E.F. Dorsey, and W.B. Fuller. William served in Ramsey's 1st GA and the 12th GA. William S. Beadles died 10/9/81 at Fayetteville, GA. Widow applied Fayette Co. 9/5/19. William married Miss. R.M. Bennett 3/7/65 in Fayette Co. Witness John B. Goodwyn stated that he knew William before the war, and that he was with in 10 feet of him when he was shot in the leg at Monocacy. RCS Served as a Pvt. in Co. A Ramsey's 1st. GA in 1861. The History of Fayette Co. list wife as Roxie Bennett, and further states that they had 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls. This history also states that Beadles was principal of the Fayetteville Seminary in 1877 & 78. Toomstone list birth date as 11/24/39. Bearden Reuben H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Wounded 10/30/63 Ft Sumter, wounded Cold Harbor 6/2/64, missing 10/19/64 Ceder Creek. 1850 Census list Reuben Bearden age 10 living Carroll Co. in the household of Richard Bearden. 1870 Census list R.H. Bearden living Heard Co GA age 29. PR Widow applied 9/29/09 in Fayette Co. Reuben married Miss Nancy E. Handley 2/20/59 in Carroll Co. She was born in Fayette Co. 12/5/40. Reuben was a POW, he came home Fall of 1865, she thought that he had been captured the first part of 1865. Witness William McMillian of Campbell Co. states that he (McMillian) was captured 10/64 (actually 9/25/64) and that Reuben was with the command at that time. He also stated that he was well acquainted with Reuben after the war. Witness Alvin D. Freeman stated that he thought that Reuben was wounded at Cold Harbor in 1864. Served in Ramsey's 1st GA. Transferred from 12th GA to 66th GA Capt. Belisle's Co. 10/63. The 66th GA participated in the Atlanta Campaign. Captured 7/24/64, sent to Camp Chase POW Camp #2, OH. Witness' L.D. Belisle and R.D.P. Brooks. L.D. Belisle stated that he had known John Belisle all his life. Both witness' were wounded, and not with their commands at the time of surrender. At the time of application, J.H. Belisle kept a boarding house in Atlanta. They had 2 children (at home) Marvin 13, and Charlie 11. John H. Belisle died 11/06 in Atlanta. Widow applied Fulton Co. 8/27/13. She had been a resident of GA since 9/52. John H. Belisle married Louisa J. Banks 4/19/68 in Fayette Co. She stated that she and John had raised 13 children. Ramsey's 1st GA. Bevis James Madison, Pvt., Enlisted 7/1/62, Newnan, Wounded lung 7/9/64 Monocacy MD., Taken prisoner at hospital Frederick, MD. 7/10/64, Sent to Point Lookout POW Camp, Exchanged 9/30/64, 11/1/64 granted wounded furlough. PR Applied Coweta Co. 4/19/90. Born 1/15/40 in GA. Shot through right Breast at Monocacy, MD, ball passing through right Lung and coming out under left Shoulder. Wound caused more trouble as applicant grew older he coughed up blood, and was not able to work. Information certified by former commanding officer James W. Anderson. James drew a pension in Coweta Co. through 1905. He moved to Heard Co. and drew there in 1906. He then moved to Troup Co. and drew there beginning in 1907. He applied in Fulton Co. 10/28/12, living at Fort McPherson. On his Fulton Co. application, he stated that he enlisted at Chattanooga 8/62, and that while a POW he was held at Fort McHenry. Witness' to that application were A. Freeman and J. Robinson of Coweta Co. In answer to the question, when did applicant leave his command, the witness' stated that he did not leave the command, the command left him. James M. Bevis was on the pension roll of Floyd Co. at the time of his death, which occured 9/8/28 in that county. A.L. Bevis served as a witness at that time. Bevis John Hampton, Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Killed 7/9/64 Monocacy MD. Brannon Alfred Fletcher, Pvt., Enlisted 7/1/63, Newnan, Wounded, Captured on march 8/8/64 Shepherdtown, VA. PR Applied Heard Co. 1/16/97. Born Newton Co. 5/16/34. In prison at wars end, a POW for about 11 months, captured 7/64. A farmer, has a wife and 4 children, all left home. Witness J.E. Robinson states that Alfred was captured. Living 1907. Brock James Daniel Jr., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Killed 6/2/64 Cold Harbor VA. PR Widow Frances applied in Carroll Co 5/2/91. They married 12/22/50, and she has been a resident of GA since 1/40. She was still living in Carroll Co in 1907. 3 witness', Y.H. Thompson, S.S. Conyers, and J.E. Robinson of Coweta Co stated that they were present on 6/2/64 when James was shot through the head and killed in the Battle of Cold Harbor. They helped bury him. Brooks Richard D.P., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Wounded 6/2/64 shot through the lung, Cold Harbor, Left for dead at field hospital, Later transferred to hospital in Richmond, Furlough to Campbell Co. GA, on furlough at close of war, Died 10/27/15, Buried Palmetto, GA. 1850 Census list R.P.D. Brooks age 10 living Coweta Co in the household of Wilson W. Brooks. In the same household, David H. Brooks. PR Applied Coweta Co 3/22/95. GA resident since 1/10/41. Gun shot wound Cold Harbor, ball entered above right nipple passing through shoulder blade, causing bleeding from mouth and nose and the wound, and causing paralysis. Witness' W.A. Mitchell and J.W. Anderson said that they thought that he would die. He never fully recovered and was not able to return to the war. At time of application, he was unable to perform manual labor. The Confederate Veteran states that "Dick" Brooks was born 1/10/41, the son of Walker and Sarah Brooks of Coweta Co. Other information is confirmed by the CV, which further states: "Six crippled old comrades were his pallbearers, each with his stronger hand to the casket, the other grasping a stick" Brown Andrew P., 1Lt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Promoted 11/6/62, Killed Fort Sumter 10/27/63. 1850 Census list Andrew P. Brown age 9 living Coweta Co in the household of Joseph T. Brown. RCS Also served as Lt. in Co. A Ramsey's 1st GA in 1861. Bryant Elijah L., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Discharged due to health 12/11/62. 1850 Census list 2 Elijah Bryants living in Campbell Co. 1870 census list E.L. Bryant living Campbell Co GA age 35. PR Applied Carroll Co 11/6/00. Born 8/11/36 Campbell Co. Discharged at Cumberland Gap due to Rheumatism and Lung problems after the battle at Perryville, KY. He later joined 4th GA Reg State Troops. He was a 1st Lt in Capt Carlton's Co. Col (later Governor) Candler commanded the Reg. The unit guarded prisoners at Andersonville. He was on furlough from that command at Wars end. Witness Alvin D. Freeman states that Bryant was honorably discharged around Christmas 1862. Witness Walter C. Camp states that Bryant enlisted into Co B 4th Reg. State Troops. Bryant had one son, and he loaned the son money to start a business in Palmetto. The son forged his father's name in order to secure additional loans. When the business failed, Elijah Bryant gave up every thing he owned in order to keep his son out of prison. Because of this, he spent the last few years of his life in poverty. Camp age 9 living Campbell Co in the household of Westley Camp. 1870 census list J.T. Camp living Campbell Co GA age 27. PR Applied 9/23/05 Carroll Co. Born Campbell Co 12/23/41. Served until 10/15/62, and went into hospital at Lexington, Ky with Typhoid Fever. Captured at hospital and later carried to Vicksburg, MS and exchanged, and carried to hospital at Jackson, MS. From there, he was furloughed home by a board of physicians in early 1863. He was never able to return to the command. Witness' E.L. Bryant and J.F. Hollis state: Camp was left in hospital at Lexington and captured. The command was in retreat from Kentucky. He was in prison at Louisville. While in KY on 8/28/62, he was shot through the right thigh by a mini ball, near Williamsburg or London, KY. Bone was fractured, causing pieces of bone to work out and injure the leaders of the leg. Can't walk without a stick. He tried to farm, and had no family. Witness' A.D. Freeman, M.W.T Sims, and W.A. Mitchell stated that Echoles was detailed to secure forage and supplies for his command, and while the Army was traveling along a mountain road in KY, Echoles was shot from his horse by a "bushwhacker". While we were not present when he was shot, we know that he was shot, and we think that he was permanently disabled. 1897 witness' to disability W.P. Echoles and W.D. Echoles stated that W.S. can't plow, hoe, cut wood, cut oats, cut wheat, pick cotton, can't do any farm work that requires walking. On an application in 1912, Echoles stated that he had also been shot in the left Shoulder, and that he was present at the surrender. 1912 witness' A.D. Freeman and J.E. Robinson stated that they were both at the surrender, and that Echoles was in the neighborhood, he was in the retreat from Petersburg to near Appomattox. W.S. Echoles died 4/30/23 in Heard Co. W.P. Served in 1st. GA 1 year, prior to enlisting in the 12th GA. On 7/6/62, he was injured in the train collision near Ringgold. He was pinned in the wreckage for hours surrounded by dead and dying men and horses. His left leg was badly crushed, and both legs and one arm were pinned. He was also scalded by the steam. The wreckage caught fire, and would have burned Goodwyn, had men with buckets not put the fire out. He was not able to return to the unit until after Christmas, and even then could not walk for several more months. He was shot through the left chest and right leg at Monocacy, MD. In his old age, all these wounds were causing severe problems for Goodwyn. Witness Alvin D. Freeman stated that if any Confederate Soldier richly deserves a pension, John B. Goodwyn does.
