Evans: "When Highway I-85 right of way was surveyed. I became interested in anything of historical value that might be destroyed when construction began. My main interest was in anything built by the very first settlers after Coweta county was formed in 1826. About two miles south of my home was the John C. Meadows home and the center line of I-85 would be within a few feet of this home and other buildings that were built by John C. Meadows very shortly after the county was formed. These log buildingings were in very good condition to be nearly a century and a half old. The buildings are examples of unusual and interesting construction, un- (Cont'd on page 2, Section A) County Purchases Historic Log Cabin ( Continued from Page 1) like most log buildings you see. Hoping to preserve these buildings, I appeared before the County Commissioners more than once, asking their help in saving these as historical landmarks. The Newnan Times - Herald, James O. Hardin of radio station WCOH and Johnny Brown, WNEA, carried news reports each time I make this re- quest. For several years we were unable to acquire these buildings. In July, 1971, the County Commissioners created a Coweta County Recreation Commission. Commissioner Morris A. Hall appointed me to this commission. In October, Mr. Hall was fortunate in securing twelve acres of land from Mr. Marvin A. Woolen and 4.9 acres from the Banks Foundation in Grantville. When the Recreation Commission learned of the availability of this park and these buildings, they voted to ask for these Meadows buildings to be preserved in this park for historical and other purposes. Mr. Charles Mottola was the attorney working on the rights of way for I-85, and through the efforts of Mr. Mottola and Vernon Hunter, Clerk to the County Commissioners, Coweta county acquired five buildings from the I-85 right of way. All five Commissioners were interested and agreed to remove these log cabins to the park at Grantville. The citizens of Coweta should be grateful to the many who worked to make this possible --- to name a few --- Mr. and Mrs. Morris A. Hall, who have been very interested in these projects for Coweta, the other Commissioners: Chairman W. N. Wood, Leroy H. Johnson, Wilkins w. Kerby, Jr., Thomas Luckie, Vernon Hunter, County Clerk; Wendell Whitlock, Warden; Jesse Hand, Assistant Warden, and other employees, Charles Mottola and several highway officials are thanked fro their generosity.
