Nipper, deceased, having been filed in my office, all persons concerned are cited to show cause by the first Monday in December 1908 why said application for twelve months support should not be granted. This Nov. 2, 1908. L.A. Perdue, Ordinary ---- DEATH OF REV. F.G. GOLDEN It becomes the sad duty of the Herald and Advertiser to chronicle the death of another good man this week, Rev. F.G. Golden, who passed away Monday night at his home on Second avenue. He suffered from a pulmonary trouble and lingered many weeks before the final end came. The deceased was for ten or twelve years an active member of the North Georgia Conference but owing to ill health he was forced to leave the ministry and two or three years ago was placed on the superannuated list. After leaving the ministry he taught school at different points and was quite successful.. Continued ill health made it neccessary for him to abandon this calling also and for some time prior to his death he was confined at home in a state of almost helpless invalidism. The deceased was 43 years of age and is survived by his wife and three children who have the sympathies of everyone in their bereavement. The remains were interred at Coke's Chapel, 8 miles east of Newnan where the funeral was held, services conducted by Dr. R.J. Bigham and Rev. A.E. Sansburn. The interment was made with Masonic honors. ---- SENOIA News Otis, the 20 year old son of Mr. Wm. Hannah of Stricklandtown in Meriwether county, accidentally shot and killed himself last Saturday evening. He had been hunting and was returning home and when taking the gun from the buggy one load was emptied into his left side, producing almost instant death. His remains were laid to rest at Rocky Mount Sunday evening. Rev. W.A. Davis conducted the funeral services. --- PALMETTO News A wedding of much interest to the people of Palmetto was that of Miss Sara Ellington and Mr. Ervin Herrington which took place in Birmingham on Thursday at the home of the bride's brother Mr. W. Ellington. Mr. and Mrs. Herrington are both from Meridian, Miss., but the bride has often visited Palmetto as the guest of her aunt, Mrs. Sallie Abrams and has many friends here. --- Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Erwin Culbreath have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter Annie Jean to Mr. Eli Brannon Cotton of Grantville, the wedding to occur on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 17th at 6 o'clock at the First Methodist church. --- MORELAND Mrs. Jas. Cureton of Austell is visiting her mother Mrs. H.A. Martin who continues ill, we regret to say. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Mr. W.M. Bohannon and wife of Roswell, N.M. are spending some time with relatives in Sharpsburg and vicinity. --- Cora Bailey, colored, was tried before Ordinary Perdue yesterday on a writ of lunacy and adjudged a fit subject for the asylum. --- Hon. M.P. Harvey, a prominent citizen of Fairburn, died suddenly Saturday afternoon. A feature of the funeral which took place Sunday afternoon, was the eloquent oration at the grave by Hon. C.S. Reid of Palmetto, a lifelong friend of the deceased. --- Mrs. T.G. Farmer left Wednesday morning for Lexington, Ga., in response to a telegram advising her of the critical illness of her sister Mrs. W.T. Brooks. Mrs. Brooks is well remembered here as Miss Clifford Walton, her girlhood days having been spent in Newnan and her many friends will pray for her recovery. --- Miss Helen Long (president of the Newnan U.D.C.) has located another "Confederate father" in the person of Dr. F.M. Brantly of Senoia. This venerable citizen is now past 90, and has not only been a leading member of his profession but during his long and useful career has also filled many positions of trust and honor in public life. He is one of the original charter members of the Georgia Medical Society and until recent years, never missed a meeting of that body. --- The Herald and Advertiser regrets to note the death of Mrs. Martha A. Harris which occurred about three weeks ago at Monroe, Ga., aged 72. She was a sister of the late Geo. W. Ramey and an aunt of Mrs. Geo. H. Carmical, Mrs. A.B. Cates, Miss Emmie Robinson and Mr. J.E. Robinson all of this city. She formerly resided in Newnan and was loved and esteemed by everyone. Her nearest surviving relative is a sister Mrs. Emma Hester of Monroe. The remains were carried to Atlanta for interment. --- DEATH OF JUDGE R.M. McCASLAN Judge R.M. McCaslan, one of Meriwether's oldest and most prominent citizens, died Friday at his home in Greenville. He had been in poor health for several months and while able to be up the greater part of the time, there was little hope of his recovery. Death came rather suddenly at last, and caused genuine grief throughout Meriwether county where he was universally esteemed. For twenty-nine years he filled the office of County School Commissioner and during this period he built up one of the best rural school systems in the state. He had been twice married, his second wife being Miss Willie Hill of Coweta county, who, with a young son, survives him. At the time of his death he was 75 years of age. Rev. J.E. Hannah of this city went down to Greenville and conducted the funeral on Saturday morning after which the remains were brought to Newnan for interment. A brief service at the grave was conducted by Dr. Jas. Stacy. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, November 13, 1908 LONE OAK News Nov. 11th Mr. C.D. Culpepper has purchased the residence and farm of his mother Mrs. Feriby Culpepper who now makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Sewell. --- The marriage of Miss Lurline Clyatt and Mr. Paschal Moore is expected to take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Clyatt, parents of the bride. --- LOCAL News Mr. H. Monroe Cook and Miss Cecil Pitman of Turin were married last Sunday afternoon at the home of Rev. and Mrs. W.A. Sears, who performed the ceremony. --- The Herald and Advertiser regrets to note the death of Mr. John L. Bean, one of Coweta's cleverest and best citizens which occurred Wednesday at his home near Grantville. He had been in declining health for more than a year, and his death, while lamented in the community where he had resided so long, was not unexpected. He was about 66 years of age and was a veteran of the Civil War. He is survived by his wife and eight children, five of the children being the issue of a former marriage, the first wife having died many years ago. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at Lutherville, services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. B.P. Searcy. --- Saturday evening, Mrs. Hattie Shell breathed her last at the home of her son Mr. Jack C. Shell, at this place. The deceased was the widow of the late Rufus Shell and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Columbus Head who died near Turin many years since. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church at Standing Rock and was held in high esteem not only the the members of her church but by all who knew her. She leaves two sons and two daughters to mourn her death. The remains were carried to Standing Rock Sunday afternoon where the funeral service was conducted by Rev. L.L. Landum, after which they were conveyed to Tranquil cemetery where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband and parents. The Senoia Enterprise-Gazette. --- McCOLLUM News Mrs. L.C. Grady of Carroll county is spending a while with her daughter Mrs. W.D. Banks. --- Mr. W.J. Hembree and son spent Saturday and Sunday with his daughters Mrs. J.W. Hines and Mrs. E.S. Banks in the Second district. --- Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Posey and children spent Monday night with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Hembree. --- PALMETTO News Mrs. S.M. Dean has returned from Covington where she attended the annual State Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution. --- Mrs. Walthall Morris spent several days last week in Atlanta with her sister Mrs. Frank Mason. --- Miss Lucia Smith of Newnan is visiting her sister Mrs. J.R. Sims. --- MORELAND News Mr. John L. Bean is seriously ill. His daughter Mrs. Andrew Camp is at his bedside and we are grieved to learn that he is expected to die at any moment. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Mrs. A.M. Hughie has been ill several days with the fever. --- Miss Myrtice Mallory and Mrs. T.S. Wells of Atlanta spent Sunday with their sister Mrs. John Kite. --- Dr. C.D. Smith of College Park came down Sunday afternoon on a visit to his daughter Mrs. Sam Faver. --- There was a double wedding at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Killgo near town last Saturday. Their daughter Bessie was united in marriage to Mr. Emmett T. Turnipseed and another daughter Alice was wedded to Mr. Andrew J. Houston. ---- Mr. J.C. Mayfield who resides just over the line in Alabama, was shot and killed near Rock Mills on Saturday afternoon by Mr. Seab Hendrick of this county. The fracas was an unfortunate one, the gentlemen being friends. We understand that no arrest has been made and that Mayfield, before his death, requested that Henderick not be prosecuted. It seems that both men were drinking and that Hendrick shot in self defense. The Franklin News and Banner, the 6th inst. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, November 20, 1908 LOCAL News After suffering for several months with a severe trouble that baffled the skill of the physicians, the Death Angel came Monday at noon to relieve Mrs. Chifford Brooks, wife of Mr. Wm. T. Brooks. Besides her husband she leaves three children, a little daughter ten years old, and two little sons, aged 8 and 6 respectively. Mrs. Brooks lived near Lexington and had a number of friends who sincerely sorrow because of her death. She was reared in Newnan, her former home. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. M.S. Weaver in the presence of a number of friends who had gathered to pay her memory a last tribute. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and was buried in the Presbyterian cemetery. The Ogletorpe Echo ---- DEATH OF J.R. TOLBERT The Clarkseville, Arkansaw Herald of the 13th inst. chronicles the death of Mr. J.R. Tolbert, a former citizen of Coweta county and brother-in-law of Mr. G.O. Scroggin of Turin. He removed to Arkansas twenty or thirty years ago and became a prominent figure in the affairs of that state. The account of his death which we take from the Clarkesville Herald is printed below: " Mr. J.R. Tolbert died at his home four miles northeast of Clarkesville last Tuesday night. He was found dead in bed Wednesday morning by members of his family. He had been in feeble health for a long while and in a serious condition for the past two weeks. The remains were laid to rest in the Lamar cemetery beside his wife and son. Mr. Tolbert was well and favorably known to most of our citizens, was an extraordinarily intelligent man and able writer and for a long time was editor of The Herald and other papers published in this city. The Herald joins many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved." --- NEWNAN BOY MARRIED IN CINCINNATTI The many Newnan friends of Mr. Phil Simms will be pleased and interested to learn that he was happily married in Cincinnatti a few days ago, his bride being Miss Marie LaGrande of that city. They have gone to Paris, France on a wedding trip and will spend a year traveling in Europe. Mr. Simms is a brother of R.E. Simms of this city and attended school a few years ago. He afterwards took a course in the State School of Technology and also took the law course at the University of Georgia. After leaving college he engaged in newspaper work in Atlanta, being on the staff of The Journal for two or three years. He then went to Cincinnatti and secured a position with the Cincinnatti Post as dramatic editor and it is understood that during his stay in Europe he will continue his connection with this paper as foreign correspondent. He is a bright young man and his career since leaving Newnan has been followed with interest by the friends of his boyhood days. ---- LOCAL News Monday evening was the 85th birthday of Rev. W.J. Cotter and a large number of his Methodist friends gave him a surprise party, each bringing a gift to the well beloved preacher in token of the appreciation of the good work he has done and is doing in Newnan. The whole affair was planned without the knowledge of any of Mr. Cotter's family so they were taken completely by surprise, an the appreciation of the dear old man of this evidence of affection of the people among whom he lives was good to see. Everybody spent a very happy evening. ---- CARD OF THANKS I wish to thank the good people of Senoia and vicinity for the many kindnesses shown me during the illness of my dear husband and for numerous expressions of condolence received since his death. I appreciate these kindly attentions and expressions more than words can convey. Mrs. D.E. Elmore, Senoia, Ga., Nov. 19th ---- TURIN News On Sunday last at Pleasant Hill church, Mr. John F. Turnipseed was united in marriage to Miss Annie Washington. Rev. H.S. Rees officiated. --- Mrs. Rosa Lester of Atlanta and Mrs. Lilla Watson of Griffin are visiting their father Mr. Henry Dominick. --- The many friends of Mr. Henry L. Dominick sympathize with him in his protracted illness and trust that he may soon be restored to his wanted health. --- SENOIA News Mr. D.E. Elmore, one of our old and highly respected citizens, died Tuesday evening after an illness of several weeks. The deceased was born near Senoia on Jan. 12, 1838 where he was reared and lived until he moved with his wife to this city about six years ago. He was the father of two daughters, Mrs. J.W. Higgins who resides at Alps and the late Mrs. L.G. Morgan who died several years ago. His aged wife survives him. Mr. Elmore was a brave and fearless Confederate soldier, being a member of Co. D. 19th Ga. Rgt. He was twice wounded, once in the head from which he was unconscious for thirteen days, being left on the battlefield for dead, but was later picked up by his brother J.C. Elmore and nursed back to health. When well enough he went back to the duties of soldier and served until the battle of Ocean Pond, Fla., where he lost one of his legs, thus closing his career as a soldier. The people honored him many times and he always discharged his duties faithfully and well. He served as County Treasurer one term, as doorkeeper of the Georgia Legislature one or more terms and several years as ex-officio Justice of the Peace of this district. He had been a Mason nearly all of his life and loved the order next to the Christian church of which he was a lifelong member. After funeral services by his pastor, Rev. D.A. Brindle, the remains were laid to rest with Masonic honors in the Elmore cemetery where a large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives gathered to pay a last tribute. ---- SHERIFF WEBB OF CARROLL COUNTY DEAD Carrollton, Ga., Nov. 18th J.P. Webb, sheriff of Carroll county, died of heart and liver trouble here last night. He was deputy sheriff under Jos. B. Merrell, when the riot occurred in Carrollton a few years ago, when the sheriff and deputy sheriff distinguished themselves as brave and fearless officers. Four years ago Mr. Webb was elected sheriff of Carroll county and served the people four years and at the last election was re-elected. The funeral service will be tomorrow morning and the remains will be carried to Roopville for interment. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Miss Gertrude Weldon of Moreland is the guest of her sister Mrs. Young Scroggin. --- Hon. Robert B. Adair, for twenty-five years treasurer of Meriwether county, died on Saturday. --- Mr. and Mrs. John Harris Reeves of Palmetto announce the engagement of their daughter Elma to Mr. Thomas G. King of Newnan, the marriage to take place early in December. --- Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Morgan went down to Senoia Wednesday to attend the funeral of Mr. D.E. Elmore whose death occurred at that place on Tuesday. The deceased was the father-in-law of Mr. Morgan. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, November 27, 1908 LOCAL News Mrs. J.T. Williams who has suffered for many weeks from a cancerous growth in the joint of one of her ankles, underwent an operation for this trouble Monday afternoon. It was found necessary to amputate the afflicted member several inches above the ankle joint. Mrs. Williams has the sympathy of many friends in her affliction, all of whom wish her a speedy and safe recovery. --- DEATH OF MR. HENRY DOMINICK The Herald and Advertiser deeply regrets to chronicle this week the death of Mr. Henry Dominick, one of Coweta's oldest and most respected citizens, which occurred Tuesday night at his home in Turin, after an illness of about five weeks, at age 69. Mr. Dominick was an example of old fashioned simplicity and honesty and enjoyed the confidence of everyone. He made the Golden Rule the rule of his life, dealing with his fellow man always in a spirit of fairness and straightforwardness and asking no more than he was willing to give. He was warmly attached to his friends and they could command him for any favor that was in his power to grant. He esteemed honesty and integrity above everything, virtues which he regarded as the only badge of good citizenship. He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting at the outbreak of hostilities as a member of Co. A 7th Ga. Rgt and did his duty faithfully and thoroughly. Although quiet and unobtrusive to the point of timidity, he was a useful citizen and will be sadly missed in the community. He is survived by his wife and four children, the latter being Mr. Edgar Dominick and Mr. Paul Dominick of Turin, Mrs. Rose Lester of Atlanta and Mrs. O.H. Watson of Griffin. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, the interment being made in the Smyrna cemetery. At the grave, Hon. Chas. L. Moses paid a beautiful and touching tribute to the deceased, who had been his neighbor and friend since boyhood. The funeral was largely attended. ---- DEATH OF PIONEER CITIZEN The annoucement of the death of Dr. A.C. Pease, veteran druggist and pioneer citizen, which occurred Monday night in his apartment in the Virginia House, will be read with genuine sorrow by his many friends throughout the county and elsewhere. He had been practically helpless for three to four years before his death due to the encroachments of age and physicial infirmities which could not be reached through the usual remedial agencies but by means of a roller chair he was able to get out among his friends occasionally and maintained a spirit of cheerfulness almost to the last. Friday night he suffered a sudden collapse and remained in a semi-conscious condition until 11 o'clock Monday night when he died. Dr. Pease was 82 years of age. He was a native of Connecticut and came to Newnan in 1854 or 1855 and engaged in the drug business. He was associated with the late Dr. J.T. Reese continuously from the time he came to Newnan and when Dr. Reese died, he continued to manage the business. About five years ago he retired from active pursuits and during his remaining days sought only rest and quietude. He was a remarkable character in many respects and probably the oldest and most widely known druggist in the state. He was never married, his only relatives being two nieces and three nephews who reside in Massachusetts. The funeral took place Tuesday morning, services being held in the parlors of the Virginia House. Rev. J.B.S. Davis who officiated, paid a splendid tribute to the dead man and brief talks were made also by Dr. Jas. Stacy and Rev. W.J. Cotter. The remains were carried to Somers, Conn., for interment, the corpse being accompanied from Newnan by Mr. H.H. North. John Spann, Dr. Pease's faithful colored attendant for several years was also taken along by Mr. North. ---- GRANTVILLE News Mr. W.P. White, one of Grantville's oldest and most respected citizens, died Tuesday afternoon. His remains were carried Wednesday to St. Marks and laid to rest beside those of his wife who preceded him to the grave several years ago. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. --- Mrs. H.D. Pace has returned to her home in Griffin after spending several days with her sister Mrs. C.E. Sewell. --- MADRAS News Mr. J.H. Fry of Moreland was a recent visitor to his sister Mrs. Lula Cates. --- Mrs. W.R. Cole was called to the bedside of her sister Mrs. A.S. Massey at Rocky Mount last Wednesday and will remain with her until a change occurs. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Cook were the guests Saturday and Sunday of their sister Mrs. Guy Cavender near Sargent. --- CARD OF THANKS We desire to express our sincere thanks to the good people of our community for the many kindnesses shown us during the illness of our dear aunt, Miss Nancy Lang and for the many tokens of sympathy received since her death. Ozmore, Sargent, Ga., Nov. 23rd --- MORELAND News While driving from Newnan on Saturday afternoon, Mr. Henry Camp met with an accident. The buggy shaft broke which frightened his horse and both he and the horse were right badly hurt. --- Mrs. A.W.N. Wilson has been quite ill. Her sister Mrs. Robinson of Meriwether county is at her bedside this week. --- Rev. J.P. Pressley arrived with his bride from Due West, S.C. last week and filled his appointment at White Oak A.R.P. church on Sunday. --- SENOIA News Mrs. Emmett L. North and little daughter Lucile left Sunday morning for New Orleans, La., where Mr. North is now in chage of his company's branch. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Mrs. Eula McWilliams of Tifton is visiting her brother Mr. O.F. Allen. --- Mrs. O.D. Gorman of Chattanooga has been with Newnan relatives this week. --- Mrs. W.Y. Atkinson left Wednesday to spend Thanksgiving with her sister Mrs. E.J. Blackshear at Dublin. --- Miss Onie Brannon of Moreland who has been the guest of her aunt Mrs. B.S. Barker for several weeks, returned home today. The Atlanta Constitution --- Mr. and Mrs. Nathanial Overton Banks of Grantville announce the engagement of their daughter Lucile to Mr. George Holman Snead of Richmond, Va., the marriage to take place Dec. 22nd. --- Dr. John M. Burns, a brother of Mrs. J.B.S. Davis, died Saturday night at his home in Jackson county from an attack of pneumonia. The deceased was a retired physician, an elder in the Presbyterian church and quite prominent in his section. He was about 75 years of age. --- The Herald and Advertiser regrets to note the death of Mrs. Dr. W.H. Tanner which occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon at her home near Roscoe. Her death, which was one of the saddest that ever occurred in that community, was due to heart failure. She was about 28 years of age and a most estimable and lovable woman. The remains were carried this morning to Pine Ridge church in Campbell county where the funeral was held and the interment made. --- CARROLLTON News Mr. Daniel Blalock of Hawkinsville returned home Tuesday after a visit to his sister Mrs. R.F.
