Lewis Culpepper of Chambers county, Ala., who had come the day previous on a visit to his Lone Oak relatives, attended services Sunday morning. Seated in the chanel with his upturned face towards the minister, "Uncle" Lewis' presence was a forcible reminder of his brother the late George Culpepper, who for many years was one of the most prominent and useful members of Prospect church. "Uncle Lewis", although rapidly nearing the century mark, is still hale and hearty and interested in things temporal as well as spiritual. --- SENOIA News "Uncle" John Connell who had been sick for some time, died last Saturday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. C.L. McLeod near Standing Rock and was carried to Hollonville Sunday for burual. He was 72 years of age. He was the father of Mrs. J.T. Pennington and an uncle of Mr. T.W. Cook. --- SHOCKING DEATH OF AGED LADY Wednesday afternoon, Mrs, Narcissa Pitman and Mrs. Eugene Wilkins drove out to Mr. Will North's who resides at the Kirby place, 4 miles southwest of town. They were in a small buggy and driving a Shetland pony. Upon reaching Mr. North's home they stopped and Mrs. Wilkins alighted, leaving Mrs. Pitman seated in the buggy. While the latter was still in the vehicle a negro servant came forward to take the team but as he approached the pony wheeled suddenly to one side and upset the buggy. Mrs. Pitman was thrown violently to the grown, her head striking with such force as to fracture the skull. She was picked up unconscious and carried into the house and a messenger dispatched to the city for Dr. Thos. J. Jones. When the doctor arrived and made an examination he discovered that this unfortunate woman had been fatally hurt and was beyond the reach of surgical aid. She lingered about three hours when death relieved her sufferings. Mrs. Pitman was 72 years of age and a most estimable woman, loved and respected by all who knew her. She is survived by her two sons, Mr. J.P. Pitman of Newnan and Mr. E. Pitman of Sharpsburg, her husband having died several years ago. The funeral took place at Sharpsburg yesterday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. V.A. Tanner were grieved to hear of her death which occurred suddenly at her home in Roscoe last Thursday. --- Mr. Egbert Stamps visited in Douglas county last week. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Mrs. W.P. Gearreld is in Franklin this week with her parents Col. and Mrs. F.S.Loftin. --- Mrs. T.F. Shackleford of Newnan spent Sunday with her son Mr. G.T. Shackleford. The Cedartown Standard --- The Newnan friends of Mrs. Harry Hightower of Atlanta were deeply pained to learn of her death which occurred Monday. --- Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Sanders of Roscoe announce the engagement of their daughter Ivadeane to Mr. Jacob Marvin Starr, the wedding to occur Dec. 20th. --- Meriwether county has put in a requisition for a quota of felony convicts and will work them on the public roads. The plantation of A.H. Freeman near Greenville has been rented for a prison farm. --- Mrs. V.E. Bowen of Greenville announced the engagement of her daughter Irma Reid to Mr. Harvey Hill Brandenburg of Haralson. The marriage will take place the middle of January. --- The sad news of the death of Mr. Zeke Owens of Oakland reached us yesterday morning. Mr. Owens was recently bitten by a mad dog and before death he suffered agonies from a violent case of rabies. The Meriwether Vindicator, the 4th inst. --- Saturday morning, Miss Ethel G. Taylor was united in marriage to Mr. H.H. Duffy of Bessemer, Ala., at the home of the bride's father in south Newnan. Rev. J.S. Hardaway officiated. The bride is the attractive daughter of Mr. J.L. Taylor and is popular with a wide circle of friends. The groom is connected with a large manufacturing establishment at Bessemer where he holds a responsible position. The young couple left immediately after the ceremony for their Alabama home, going by way of Atlanta. ---- An event that was a pleasant surprise to their friends was the marriage on Sunday afternoon last of Miss Tommie Lou North and Mr. W.C. Adams. The ceremony took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Whitmire and was performed by Dr. R.J. Bigham. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bee North and the groom a popular employee of the city water and light department. --- The death of Dr. A.C. Pease last week leaves only five old citizens who were in business here prior to the Civil War. They are "Uncle" Duke Cole who will celebrate his 88th birthday during the present month; "Uncle" Potts Nimmons, the first white male born in Newnan and now in his 79th year; Major D.P. Woodroof who will be age 77 in March; Judge Thos. Swint, age 82; Dr. W.T. Cole now nearing his 81st birthday; Dr. Jas. Stacy age 78, for nearly half a century pastor of the Presbyterian church. These citizens are loved and venerated by everyone and it would be cause for universal rejoicing if their days could be lengthened indefinitely. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 11, 1908 SENOIA News We regret to learn that J.W. Hutchinson, living near Haralson is seriously sick this week, having had several attacks of heart troubles. --- The 13 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Shipp of Atlanta died of typhoid fever on Monday and was brought here Tuesday morning and carried to the Elmore cemetery for burial. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the good people of Sharpsburg and surrounding country for the kind attentions shown our afflicted husband and father during our great sorrow. There will ever be a green spot in our memory for the dear, good people who were so faithful during the many months that he was confined to his room, nor can we ever forget the kindness of our good and faithful physician. Attaway of Warrior, Ala., has been visiting relatives in old Georgia recently. --- "Aunt" Harriet Cathcart is spending some time with Mrs. Joe Attaway near Moreland. --- McCOLLUM News Mrs. Looney West visited her mother Mrs. Coggin at Madras last week. --- Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Posey spent Saturday and Sunday with their mother Mrs. J.W. Tate at Newnan. --- TURIN News Our community was plunged in deepest gloom on Saturday by the death of Judge R.A. North of Sharpsburg; and our grief was accentuated by the tragic fate of Mrs. Narcissa Pitman, also a former resident of Sharpsburg, whose death was recorded in the local columns of the Herald and Advertiser last week. Judge North had attained the age of 84 years. By reason of his infirmities he had been confined at home for several months prior to his death but he bore his afflictions with Christian patience, lingering submissively until the master bade him "cross over and rest from his labors". Judge North had long served as a deacon of the Baptist church and had "purchased to himself a good degree of boldness in the faith which is in Jesus." Thus this good and faithful man, having served his generation well, has been gathered to his fathers. The funeral took place Sunday morning from the Baptist church at Sharpsburg and was largely attended. Services were conducted by the pastor Rev. R.M. Stevens. Brief talks in appreciation of the virtues and excellences of our departed friend were also made by Hon. J.B. Goodwyn, Mr. Jas. Owens and Prof. A.S. Jones. The remains were laid to rest in Sharpsburg cemetery beside those of the wife of his youth and a son and two daughters who preceded him to the grave several years ago. --- Mrs. Narcissa Pitman had long been a resident of Sharpsburg, was well known throughout the community and highly respected by everyone. She was the widow of the late R.E. Pitman who died many years ago. To her two sons Mr. Ed Pitman of Sharpsburg and Mr. Paul Pitman of Newnan, the writer tenders sincere condolence. ---- DODSON News Mr. W. H. Summerlin and his other spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Gentry near Palmetto. --- Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Jones visited their daughter Mrs. Iula Brown near Franklin a few days ago. --- There have been four weddings since our last writing, as follows: Mr. Milton Sewell married a Mrs. Webster last Saturday in Carrollton Mr. Charlie Tarleton was married Sunday to a Miss Crumby of Atlanta Mr. Ben Sewell was married Sunday to a Miss Arnold Mr. Tom King was married Tuesday to Miss Elma Reeves of Rico. ---- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News The many friends of Mrs. T.S. Bailey will regret to learn of her critical illness. --- Mrs. R.E. Simms has returned from a visit of some length to her daughter Mrs. Lindsey Scarbrough at Anniston, Ala. --- Mr. Jas. Speer, a well known young man residing near Moreland died yesterday from an attack of pneumonia. He was 24 years of age. --- Ike Hill, colored, was tried before Ordinary Perdue last Friday on a writ of lunacy and was found to be a fit subject for the asylum. He was carried to that institution on Saturday. --- CARROLLTON News Death loves a shining mark. The many Carrollton friends of Miss Lee Ridley, the charming daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Ridley of Heard county were shocked to learn of her death in Atlanta last week. She was taken seriously ill on Saturday night the 28th ult., and rapidly grew worse until her pure spirit was wafted to the Great White Throne. She was a young woman of rare lovableness and a general favorite with all who knew her. She was the idol of her fond parents. To them she rendered herself indispensable in a hundred helpful ways. She divided with her mother the cares of the household and to her father she rendered valuable aid in the management of his business affairs. Painful as this is to father, mother relatives and friends, yet there is one here, poor boy whose heart lies buried with that adorned one in her peaceful grave "neath the cypress shades of Roanoke cemetery. ---- After a pleasant visit to her daughter Mrs. Jas. Thompsins at Woodbury, Mrs. O.L. Reese returned home on Wednesday. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 18, 1908 LOCAL News Mrs. Thomas William Powel of Newnan announced the engagement of her daughter Sadie May to Mr. John Darwin Faver of LaGrange, the wedding to take place on the evening of Jan. 6th at her home in Newnan. --- Mr. Hunter B. Hardaway and Miss Nell Russell surprised their friends this week by getting married. They procured a carriage Monday night and in company with a gentleman friend, drove through the country to Fairburn where the wedding ceremony was performed Tuesday morning. Rev. F.J. Dodd officiated. The event was the culmination of a romance which began some time ago and the marriage, although impromtu, was exepcted to take place anyway early in the coming year. The young couple returned to Newnan on the train Tuesday and were given an ovation by their friends, many of whom gathered at the depot to greet them upon their arrival. They were escorted to the home of the groom's parents, Dr. and Mrs. J.S. Hardaway where an informal reception was held. ---- GRANTVILLE News Dec. 16th The friends of Mrs. Will Jones were deeply pained to hear of her death which occurred Tuesday from an attack of pneumonia. The funeral was conducted at Bethlehem Wednesday afternoon by Rev. A.H.S. Bugg. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. --- PALMETTO News Capt. J.T. Beckman and Miss Louise Beckman will leave on New Years for Charleston, S.C. where they will spend the month of January with Capt. Beckman's daughter Mrs. William Schwettman. --- TURIN News Mr. Jas. Banks and Miss Mamie Hardy surprised their friends Sunday afternoon by getting married. The ceremony was performed by Rev. L.L. Landrum. The bride is the beautiful and accomplished daughter of Mrs. Jane Hardy and is a social favorite in the community. The groom is a popular young man who has been engaged in the mercantile business here. --- Mrs. Jas. A. Brown, an aged lady residing near Line Creek church, died this morning. The deceased was born and reared in Coweta county. Her maiden name was Vineyard and she was married to Mr. Brown over sixty years ago. She was the mother of thirteen children, seven sons and six daughters, all of whom were present at her bedside when she died. She is also survived by her aged husband. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Thursday, morning, services to be conducted by Rev. H.S. Rees, after which the remains will be interred in the family burying ground. The writer extends sincere sympathy to the sorrowing relatives. --- Mrs. Lee Hand of Senoia is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Moses. --- HAPPY VALLEY News Mr. Johnnie Haines spent Monday night with his uncle, Mr. W.P. Dukes. --- The many friends of Mr. J.W. Dukes will be pained to learn of his illness at his home in Newnan and hope for his speedy recovery. --- MORELAND News The old year is closing with deep sorrow to the family of Mr. and Mrs. David Speer. Their only son James died on the 10th inst. He had been a member of the Baptist church here about five years. The parents and five sisters are left to mourn his departure. --- Mr. Luther Benton of Atlanta and Mr. Walter Benton and family of Lutherville visited their sister Mrs. Ellen Russell on Sunday. --- Mrs. Humphries, sister of Mr. J.D. Murphy, has moved here from Grantville and will make her home with the latter. --- LONE OAK News McCOLLUM News Mrs. J.W. Tate and two children of Newnan spent Sunday with her son, Mr. R.B. Posey. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Harper and children from near Palmetto visited the latter's parents Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Phillips last Sunday. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Miss Ruby Lumpkin of Summerville was in the city on Tuesday, the guest of her uncle Mr. G.R. Black. --- Mrs. Nat Estes of Gay, Georgia and Mrs. J.T. Gay of Montgomery, Ala., are the guests of Mrs. L.B. Mann and Miss Lucy Mann. --- Mr. Julian Sutherland who has been spending some time with his brother Mr. P.L. Sutherland, returned this week to his home at Green Cove Springs, Fla. --- On Wednesday afternoon last, Mr. John T. Haisten was united in marriage to Miss Jane Grimes, at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Martha Grimes in the Fourth district, Rev. F.J. Amis officiating. --- Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Broadwater have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter Lucile to Mr. C.W. Cunningham of Roanoke, Ala., the ceremony to take place next Sunday afternoon at home. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 25, 1908 LOCAL News The many Newnan friends of Mrs. Jas. H. Shelnutt were deeply grieved this week to hear of her death which occurred Tuesday morning at her home in Atlanta, at age 62. The deceased was for many years a resident of Newnan, being a sister of the late A.R. Word and was highly esteemed by everyone. After fifteen years ago she moved with her husband and children to Atlanta and resided there until her death. She is survived by her husband and three children, the latter being Mrs. F.C. Martin of Waterloo, N.Y., Mrs. J.H. Triplett and Mr. E.L. Shelnutt of Atlanta. The remains were brought to Newnan Friday afternoon and interred in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery. --- MORELAND News Mrs. Mattie Wood of Atlanta is visiting her cousin Mrs. Andrew Camp. --- NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS News Mrs. Annie Johnson, an aged lady of Palmetto, died on Wednesday. --- After a lingering illness, Mrs. J.R. Respass, an aunt of Mrs. W.F. Culpepper, passed away at her home in Jackson last Thursday night. She was 93 years of age and until a few weeks ago she was able to be on the streets and attend church services. She was a remarkable woman.
