Pressly's family Mrs. T.T. Mattox of White Oak The day was one of unalloyed pleasure to everyone present. Several asked us to give a brief history of our father's family as far back as we could find any record and I will give a few of these points here: Our father's grandfather Jas. Young was born in County Down, Ireland on Aug. 15, 1750 and his wife, Mary Thompson was born in the same county on Feb. 15, 1753. They were married in Ireland on Sept. 7, 1773. They emigrated to America in 1774 and settled in Newberry county, S.C. near th town now known as Prosperity. They had eight daughters and four sons. Jas. Young died Sept. 17, 1802 and his wife died Nov. 14, 1834. This worthy couple were the ancestors of many of the families of White Oak community, among them the Youngs, Carmicals, Bowers, Russels, Coles, Browns and Walthalls. Abram, eldest son of Jas. and Mary Thompson Young, was our grandfather and the only one of this large family of which we will write. He was born in Newberry, S.C. on Aug. 9, 1780. He married Mary Ann Carmical, daughter of Patrick Carmical and Elizabeth Thompson, Jan. 20, 1802. They had eleven sons and one daughter, our father being the youngest child. They moved to Coweta county in 1838 and settled on the lands now owned by their grandchildren, J.W. Young, Mrs. T.H. Mattox and Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Johnson, Mrs. Mattox owning the old home place. Our father, Jos. Young, was 19 years of age when he moved with his father to Georgia. Two of his brothers, Abram Jr. and James had already moved here and he and his sister Elizabeth (afterwards Aunt Betsy Bowers) came with their father Abram Young Sr. Our grandfather died shortly after coming to Georgia but our grandmother lived many years in the old home with our father, and both lived and died in the home where they first settled. Our father (Jos. Young) was born July 6, 1819; married Elizabeth Speer on June 27, 1850 and died June 28, 1899. The Young family are of Scotch-Irish descent as are most of those from the north counties of Ireland. Some writer has said "If an Irishman is a Presbyterian when he lands in America, he is Scotch-Irish; if he is a Catholic, he is pure Irish." Written by Cora Johnson ---- WELCOME News Mr. Young Mattox of the Sixth district and Miss Ruth Lester of Hope, Arkansas are visiting relatives in our community. --- SENOIA News the 12th inst. Nimmons, known and loved by everybody, passed peacefully away Wednesday morning, after an illness extending over several weeks. He was peculiarly afflicted, his case baffling the skill of some of our best physicians and it had been apparent for some time that he was incurable. RANSOM For the third time within a comparatively brief space the Herald and Advertsier is called upon to chronicle a death in the family of Mrs. Georgia A. Ransom; first it was her husband, then a beloved and promising young son and now it becaomes our sad duty to note the passing away of the good woman herself. This sorrowful event occurred Sunday and while not wholly unexpected, the end came so suddenly as to greatly shock even the members of her family, who for weeks had been watching at her bedside. She had been in failing health for several months and a few weeks ago suffered a stroke of paralysis. She never rallied from this shock and thereafter death was regarded as a question of only a short time. Mrs. Ransom was 79 years of age and one of Newnan's oldest residents. Although confined to the seclusion of her home in recent years by bodily infirmities, she continued to receive her friends and retained to the last the interest and spirit, which, in her younger days, had rendered her so charming a companion. She was the oldest member of the Presbyterian church and so long as her physical condition permitted, she was a regular and faithful communicant. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Lutie N. Powers and Mrs. J.S. Powell of this city and Mr. M.S. Ransom of Atlanta. The funeral took place Monday afternoon, services being conducted by her old pastor Dr. Jas. Stacy, assisted by Rev. J.E. Hannah. The body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. --- REUNION OF STAMPS FAMILY Next Saturday at Grant Park, there will be a delightful gathering to be known as the Stamps family reunion.
