GA NEWSPAPER NOTICES FROM "THE HERALD & ADVERTISER", Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia for MAY 3, 1907 NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 3, 1907 Excerpts from the biography of Rev. Young J. Allen, from a paper read before the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the M.E. Church, Newnan, by Mrs. Nellie Leigh Cook: "Young John Allen was born in Burke County, Georgia January 3, 1836, the only child of a wealthy slave owner and big cotton planter whose full name he perpetuates. His father's death occuring two weeks before and his mother's two weeks after his birth, left him to the care of his mother's sister, Mrs. Wiley Hutchens of Meriwether County. By the loving heart and restraining hand of this aunt he was kindly reared and carefully trained in an adjoining county, where his childhood was spent. These relatives included to the Primitive Baptist faith, though none of them were members of any church. During Dr. Allen's first return visit to his homeland (from China) in 1878, this aunt, paralyzed and unable to sit up was baptized by him and received into the Methodist Church. Dr. Allen was converted at the age of 17, his call to the ministry coming with his conversion. His early education was acquired in the Prospect neighborhood school, his guardian sending him later to high schools near LaGrange, Palmetto and Starrsville, GA preparatory to his college career....After graduation, he married Miss Mary Houston, a Coweta girl, and sister of Mrs. Monterey Arnold of precious memory and a first honor graduate of Wesleyan.... Bishop Pierce appointed Dr. Allen to the China mission in 1858 at the conference held at St. Luke's in Columbus. It required almost a year prior to departure. In disposing of his slaves, not willing to separate families, he sold them in a body to Mr. Park Arnold Sr. of this county. With his wife and baby girl he left his native state Nov 21, 1859....He went via New York by way of the Indian Ocean, in a sail vessel reaching Shanghai July 13, 1860; two hundred and ten days on the voyage, one hundred and thirty six days out of sight of land.....Dr. and Mrs. Allen sent their children back to America to receive their education in the same institutions from which they drank inspiration and their grandchildren have matriculated at the same "loved mother" that gave them their educational birth into the world....Since residing in China, Dr. Allen has visited America six times in 1878, 1888, 1892, 1898, 1902 and 1906. All Georgians and the whole world honor him, for he is a world citizen..." LONE OAK News Mrs. King of Atlanta is visiting the family of her brother-in-law, Elder Samuel Whatley. __ OBITUARY of MRS. BUVENA BURNETT BAXLEY Mrs. Buvena Burnett Baxley was born May 10, 1885 and died April 2, 1907. That strong, silent angel we call death has borne away from our midst one who it seems to our poor judgement could least be spared. It is always a sad thing to have to give up our loved ones but it seemd doubly sad for one so young and full of hope for the future to be snatched away from us; yet would be bow in humble submission to the will of our heavenly father believing that " he doeth all things well". She joined the Methodist church when only 11 years of age and lived a consistent member until death. She was a true christian. She had a lovely and sweet disposition, so kind and gentle in manner that she won the esteem and love of all who knew her. She had resided in Newnan only a short time having moved here from Carroll County the first of the year. She was on a visit to her father, Mr. A.J. Burnett in Carrollton at the the time of her death. She had been in feeble health for some time but bore her sufferings without a murmur. Oh how we shall miss her bright, sweet face! She was a christian girl and woman always ready to help with word or deed. We sympathize with the grief stricken husband whose sweet home is thus broken up and with the sweet little baby boy who will never know his mother's love and worth. We hope and pray that he may become a christian man, thus fulfilling his mother's wish and honoring her who is dead. The remains were carried to St. Paul's church in Carroll county for interment. She leaves a husband, one child, a father, three brothers and one sister to mourn her death, her mother and one sister having preceded her to the grave several years ago. Her father, Mr. A.J. Burnett and two brothers, G.W. Burnett and J.A. Burnett reside in Carrollton and one brother, W.V. Burnett resides in Whitesburg. Her sister, Mrs. Boyd Stephens, lives in Newnan. "We will part, but not forever, there will be a glorious dawn, we shall meet to part no more, on the resurrection morn." A loving sister. Newnan, GA April 15, 1907. ____ TURIN News Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Down Washington street sped pursued and pursuer, with the latter gaining a few inches at each step while a motley gang of men and dogs fell in behind the principals. After a chase in which all previous records for short distance sprinting were broken, the fugitive was finally overtaken on Factory Hill and re-incarcerated, where he can now meditate upon the disadvantages of a false start. ___ DEATH OF CAPT.
