GA NEWSPAPER NOTICES FROM "THE HERALD & ADVERTISER", Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia for JUNE 7, 1907 thru JUNE 14th 1907 NEWSPAPER issue of June 7, 1907 The Herald and Advertiser has learned with sincere regret the death of Mr. A.J. Carmical, one of its old friends and patrons. This sad event occurred on April 16, at his home in Coosa County, Ala., the fell stroke which terminated his life coming suddenly and without warning. Deceased was a brother of Mr. W.W. Carmical of Panther Creek district and removed to Alabama in 1866. He was 68 years old. ____ Pope G. Barrow, the 22 year old son of Col. B.N. Barrow, died at his father's home last evening at 7 o'clock, his death being caused by consumption with which he had been afflicted for the past three years. Young Barrow was a most excellent and promising young man, whose death is a source of regret to his relatives and many friends. The burial took place Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Griffin News, Sun. 7th inst. ____ Mr. Robt. Brittain, a young man about grown, son of Mr. Wm. Brittain of Rocky Mount, happened to a fatal accident Saturday night. As he was getting into his buggy his pistol dropped from his pocket and was discharged, the ball inflicting a severe wound from which the young man died Sunday evening. The burial took place Monday at Rocky Mount. Rev. W.A. Davis conducted the service. Senoia Enterprise-Gazette. ____ Saturday night Sheriff Brewster, Chief Shackeford and Policeman Fincannon raided Holland Findlay's place just beyond the western limits of the city and bagged another bunch of gamblers. Those arrested were Holland Findlay, Ed Ayers, Ed Long, Albert Graham, Lewis Berry and Tom Thornton. Most of the gang are old offenders and were required to give bond in the sum of $100. each. When the City Court meets they will have to answer to the charge of Gambling. ___ The following business was disposed of at the regular monthly term of the Ordinary's Court on Monday last: Last Will and Testament of Rebecca H. Dodds, admitted to probate in solemn form. Twelve months' support set apart to Mrs. Ellen Russell and minor children out of the estate of Chas. A. Russell, deceased. J.E. Smith appointed administrator of the estate of Mrs. Percie E. Smith, deceased ________ A cablegram received from China on Tuesday brought the sad intelligence of the death of Dr. Young J. Allen, for nearly fifty years a Methodist missionary from Georgia to China. He was well known to our people being a brother-in-law of Mr. Sam J. Arnold of this city, and always visited Newnan upon his occasional trips to this country. He was here about a year ago and made an interesting talk at the First Methodist church, which is well remembered by those who heard him. Dr. Allen was 72 years of age. He is survived by his wife and six children, the latter being: Edgar Allen of Tien-Tsin, China Arthur H. Allen of Shanghai, China Mrs. Mollie Loher of Shanghai, China Misses Alice Allen and Ethel Allen of Shanghai, China Mary Mary Turner of New York Dr. Allen was reared near Rocky Mount, Meriwether county and never filed to visit his hold home when in the country. The late Mrs. Sam J. Arnold of this city was a sister of Mrs. Allen. ___ The largest and most brilliant social affair of the week was the reception which Mrs. J.H. Strickland gave Wednesday afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. W.C. McBride, in honor of Miss Issie Mae Roan of Fairburn. The invited guests included all the college girls and the younger society set with a few married friends of the hostess. A bevy of pretty school girls assisted by Messrs. Robert Strickland and Tom Powell, served punch in a shady nook on the veranda. _____ A few days ago Luke Estes, Ollie Smith and Jesse Smith, all white men, tanked up on 'blind tiger" booze and started out to have the time of their lives. Their maudlin peregrinations finally led them in the direction of Mr. Albert Potts' farm two miles south of town, and when opposite Mr. Potts' home, Estes and Ollie Smith began quarrelling with Jesse Smith and ended by jumping on him. As they belabored him with their fists they rent the air with curses which so frightened Mrs. Potts that she summoned her husband from the field. A telephone message soon brought Sheriff Brewster to the scene and with the assistance of Mr. Potts the men were arrested and brought to town where warrants were sworn out charing Estes and Ollie Smith with assault and being intoxicated on the public highway. They were put under bond for their appearance at the next regular term of the City Court. Jesse Smith was allowed to go upon his own recognizance, it being shown that he was trying to avoid a row with his companions. ____ About two months ago a negro named Frank Jones also known as Willie Jones, was arrested for jumping a contract which he had made with a farmer living near Senoia and in default of $150. bond was lodged in jail. Last week, Mr. J.F. Dial of Hurricane district went on the prisoner's bond and secured his released, the negro agreeing to work on Mr. Dial's farm until Dec 31st. Sunday afternoon the negro took French Leave of his employer and skipped out. Mr. Dial stood to lose $150. on the scamp and set about to effect his capture. He distrubted hand bills offering a reward of $25. for the arrest of the fugitive. Yesterday afternoon Sheriff Brewster went down to LaGrange on the blind chance that he might pick up some information that would put him on the negro's trail and in less than two hours had his quarry under arrest and was bringing him back to Newnan. He was located on a farm four miles out from LaGrange and was busy chopping cotton when arrested. The negro is now in jail and will likely stay there for a spell. ____ MADRAS News Our community was greatly shocked last Saturday by the death of Mr. Luby Atcheson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Atcheson and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. His illness was of short duration. He was the picture of health and his death, just as he was entering young manhood, is deeply lamented. Luby had many friends and relatives to mourn his departure. He was living near Turin with his brother Mr. Alvan Hyde at the time of his death. Hes remains were laid to rest Sunday afternoon in Liberty cemetery. ____ Mrs. J.C. Herring went to Macon last Sunday to visit Mrs. L.M. Smith. She returned Monday bringing with her, Eugene, one of Mr. Charlie Smith's twin babies. ___ Mr. W.E. Moore of Grandview Texas, wrote on June 1st that people of that state were having a serious time with their cotton crops, first the dry weather, then cold rains, now the bugs and grass are causing trouble. Some of the old residents there say they never saw anything like it. ____ HANDY News One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our community ws that of "Aunt' Judie Luckie which took place on Monday night of last week after a short illness. The remains were laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in Elim cemetery. Deceased leaves a son and three daughters. ____ Mrs.Pearl Meriwether of Greenwood, Miss., is visiting at the home of Mr. Taylor Jackson this week. __ Mrs. Joe Stephens of Heard County is quite sick at the home of her father, Mr. L.M. Wiggins. ___ During the storm Thursday evening of last week a tree was blown across Mr. G.A. Boynton's saw mill causing considerable damage. ___ DODSON News Mrs. J.M. Brown of Heard County is visiting her parents, Major and Mrs. T.F. Jones. ___ Mr. J.R. Atcheson's eldest son, who died near Turin with bilious fever, as buried at Liberty last Sunday afternoon. Deceased was about 15 years of age. ___ Mr. John Dukes from near Newnan, went to McDonough one day last week to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Louraney Welch. ___ NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS Mrs. E.A. Herndon of Zachry, Louisiana is visiting her sister, Mrs. S.W. Murray. ___ Mrs. M.A. Mann is spending a few days with Mrs. P.M. Blakely at Senoia. __ Mr. Levi Mann of Statesboro, GA spent Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Mann. __ The little daughter of Mrs. Annie Freeman Orr is seriously ill with typhoid fever. __ Mrs. J.G. Arnall and little son are visiting the former's parents at Union Springs, Ala. __ Mrs. Jos. T. Kirby drives the handsomest pair of horses in Newnan. They are beauties. __ Frank Gay of Opelika, Ala., spent commencement with with his friend Robert Mann. __ Mrs. E.J. Bailey and children have returned from a visit to her parents at Athens, GA. __ Married, on the 26th ult., Mr. Emmett Hendrix to Mrs. Addie Gray, of the seventh district. __ Mr. and Mrs. Will Hugh Pinson of Atlanta spent Sunday with their mother, Mrs. A.C. North. ___ Mrs. E.C. Prather of Hogansville is visiting her daughter, Mrs. D.S. Summers on spring street. __ Mrs. Raymond Lee who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Russell, returned to Atlanta yesterday. __ Mr. Lynch Turner left yesterday for a trip through Indian Territory and Missouri and will be absent about two weeks. ___ Mrs. Garland Jones of Kansas City, Missouri is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Berryman Thompson. ___ Born on the 5th inst. to Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Kestler, a son. The young man will bear the name of his honored grandfather, Manuel Salbide. ___ Miss Imogene Simms went down to Union Springs, Ala. this week to be an attendant at the Eley - Smith wedding, the bride being a cousin of Miss Simms. __ Mrs. Wyndham Kemp of El Paso Texas is on a visit to her sister, Mrs. S.W. Murray. Mrs. Kemp formed many acquaintances in Newnan when she visited her twenty years ago as Miss Sammie Herndon. She will visit relatives in Virginia and also enjoy the sights at the Jamestown Exposition before returning home. ____ After much correspondence with the officials of the State Sanatarium, Ordinary Perdue has succeeded in getting Mr. E.O. Linch of Turin, admitted as an inmate of that institution. He was carried to Milledgeville by Sheriff Brewster last Monday. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, June 14, 1907 LONE OAK News Last Sunday, services at Prospect were well attended and the excellent sermon by the pastor was one that all could appreciate. Among the visitors present was Mrs. Wood of Heard County who is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Leander Powledge. Also Mr. and Mrs. Mark Houston of Moreland and Mr. Roswell Lee of Grantville. ____ We regret to learn of the increasing feebleness of Mr. J.R. Sewell. __ Mr. J.T. Ingram of Wolf City, Texas is visiting his brother Mr. J.W. Ingram of Panther Creek district. He moved from Coweta to Texas eighteen years ago and this is his first visit to Georgia since he emigrated. ___ Miss Texas Murphy died on Wednesday of last week at the home of her father, Mr. J.W. Murphy on Temple avenue. She had been afflicted with dropsy for more than a year and her death, which came suddenly and without warning, was undoubtedly due to this cause. The remains were carried to Moreland for interment on Thursday, funeral services being conducted by Rev. A.A. Tilley. ___ MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF MARGARET SANDERS EDWARDS; Who Departed this life May 24, 1907 "Sister" Edwards united with the Baptist church at Ramah when quite young and later transferred her membership to Macedonia church in which fellowship she remained until called to her final reward. She was married to John M. Edwards in 1852. In the civil war at the second battle of Manassas, she lost her husband, leaing her four little children to be cared for in her lone widowhood. These children, George Edwards of Texas, Dr. W.R. Edwards, J.S. Edwards and Mrs. A.J. Sewell of Roscoe, GA, survive her and "rise up to call her blessed". The home of her son, Dr. W.R. Edwards, where she had been the beloved mother and counselor the the last twenty-five years of her life, realizes keenly the loss sustained in her death, while other relatives and friends share in the same sad bereavement. The church which she loved hereby extends to each and to all our sincere sympathy and accords to her memory a page of our church record, upon which we affectionately inscribe this memorial and request that the same be published in our county papers. STORY As her father's old clock was striking the hour of midnight on May 24th the gentle spirit of Miss Amanda Story of the fourth district, took its flight to the realms of eternal bliss, aged 66 years. She often spoke of being ready for the Reaper and now our heavenly father has called her to her long sweet home. She loved her church, having been a member at old Mt. Carmel for more than thirty-five years. She was a good neighbor, always trying to comfort those in sorrow or distress. She was born and reared in Coweta. Left an orphan about thirty-seven years ago, she and an unmarried sister Martha remained at the old home and agreed that nothing should separate them save death. On the 24th of May the message came at last, leaving poor Martha alone and comfortless in her sorrow. The nearest surviving relatives of the deceased are Mrs. Georgia Payton, Miss Martha Story and Mr. John A. Story, besides a number of nephews an dnieces all of whom have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. C.R. ____ TURIN News Little Miss Janet McRitchie of Newnan is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Maggie Gay. __ Mrs. E.A. Ware who has been quite ill is improving. __ Mr. Albert Thurman of Monticello, spent a day or two with homefolks this week. __ Mrs. V.A. Pitts has moved to Turin. She has been living at Senoia for the past year. __ Mrs. Robt. Perkins of Senoia was the guest of her daughter Mrs. Ed Dominick Wednesday and Thursday. ___ Mrs. J.B. Shell Jr. continues quite ill. ___ LUTHERVILLE News Mr. Carl Thornton and wife of Cedartown are with their mother, Mrs. N.H. Ushaw. __ Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brittain of Texas are visiting Mr. J.C. Norris this week. __ Mrs. Ellen Willingham was called to Newnan last week to attend her sick daughter, Mrs. J.A. Pendergrast. We hope she may soon recover. ___ DODSON News Miss Pearl Hyde of Newnan is visiting her aunt, Miss Amelia Crawford. __ Mrs. E.C. Palmer and daughter Mrs. Jessie Witt Smith, went to Senoia Saturday to attend the funeral of the child of Mr. and Mrs. H.K. Palmer of Atlanta. ___ NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS Miss Willie Wright of East Point is visiting her cousin, Miss Pearl Hughie. __ Mr. E.W. Hammett was called to LaGrange this week by the critical illness of his mother. ___ Mrs. W.T. Richards and little daughter of New Orleans are the guests of Mrs. Mary Lovejoy. ___ Mrs Herman Kolb of Provo, Ark., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Bohannon in the third district. ___ Mrs. Arnold Broyles of Atlanta came to Newnan this week to visit her aunt, Mrs. A.E. Caldwell who is quite ill. __ Dr. I.C. Loftin, the distinguished Baptist divine of Nashville, Tenn., was the guest this week of his niece Mrs. W.P. Gearreld. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Stephens, formerly of Newnan, but who have been making Carrollton their home for the past month have moved to Cedartown where they will reside in the future. ____ Mr. and Mrs. Bowen Reese and little son are visiting relatives at the latter's old home, Houstonville, Kentucky. Mr. Reese will return next week but Mrs. Reese and child will remain longer. __ We regret to note the serious illness of Mrs. A.E. Caldwell whose condition shows no sign of improvement. ___ Mrs. John L. Bailey and Mrs. Frank J. Flannery and children will leave Tuesday for a visit of some length to Mrs. J. Allen Weaver at Canton, Ohio. ___ Mrs. J.A. Pendergrast of Lutherville, who with her husband and little son is spending the summer in Newnan, is seriously ill with typhoid fever. They are staying with Prof. and Mrs. J.E. Pendergrast on Washington street. ____ DIED - - Mr. Richard Crawford, one of Clayton county's wealthiest planters died at his home near Woolsey on Monday last, aged 60 years. He was a cousin of Dr. W.T. Cole of this city and visited here occasionally. ___ Dr. Geo. M. Anderson of Texas, spent a couple of days in Newnan the first of the week. Dr. Anderson is a cousin of Honorable John S. Anderson and was born and reared in Coweta.
