Sensible man! _____ SUDDEN DEATH OF COL. PETER W. MARTIN Our community was greatly shocked Monday morning by the death of Col. Peter W. Martin of Greenville which occurred shortly after 6 o'clock at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Mattie Martin on College street. Col. Martin came to Newnan six or eight weeks ago to visit relatives and was a familiar figure on the streets, meeting and mingling with his many friends from different parts of the county during this period. Before retiring Sunday night he complained of a severe pain in the neck and remarked that he had contracted a cold earlier in the week which he thought probably accounted for his indisposition. He retired about 10 o'clock, his nephew Mr. Frank Martin, sharing his bed with him. About 6 o'clock in the morning the latter was awakened by the labored breathing of his uncle and called his mother. She and other members of the family hurried to the bedside of the dying man but by the time they reached him he had ceased to breathe. News of Col. Martin's death spread rapidly and caused the deepest sorrow in many homes. He was for several years engaged in business in Newnan being a member of the firm of Fisher, Martin & Pinson and no man in the county had more friends. Deceased was 55 years old and unmarried. The remains were carried to Greenville Monday afternoon and after funeral services at the Methodist church Tuesday morning were interred in the family burying ground near Greenville. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. J.W. Quillian, this city. ______ DEATH OF MR. N.T. WRIGHT It is with a feeling of deep sorrow and regret that the Herald & Advertiser chronicles this week the death of another good citizen, Mr. N.T. Wright, this sad event occurring yesterday morning about 6 o'clock. Mr. Wright had been inpoor health for several months but did not take to his bed until about three weeks ago. He was seriously ill from the first, the complication of ailments from which he suffered causing his family much uneasiness, although it was hoped that he would untimately rally from the attack. It was soon apparent however that his condition was critical and but little hope was held out by his loved ones that he would survive the attack. He lingered until yesterday morning when death ended his sufferings. Mr. Wright was a good man and useful citizen and his death causes the deepest sorrow in the community. His numerous admirable traits and genial disposition drew to him many warm friends who were as strongly attached to him as he was loyal to them. To those friends his death comes as a personal bereavement while the community at large mourns the loss of a useful and popular citizen. Deceased was 52 years of age. Besides his aged mother, two brothers and three sisters, he is survived by his wife and two children, who have the sincere sympathy of everyone in their sad affliction. The funeral took place this afternoon at half past two, from the Central Baptist church and was largely attended. Services were conducted by his pastor, Dr. J.S. Hardaway, assisted by Rev. F.J. Amis and Rev. W.J. Cotter, after which the body was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. _________ GRANTVILLE News Mrs. Henry Bryant of LaGrange is the guest of her sister, Mrs. G.W. Summoning the train crew to his aid, Capt. Zach Martin, the veteran conductor, went to the rescue of the imperiled car and the flames were soon extinguished. Capt. Martin appeared much exhausted by his efforts in fighting the fire and remarked to a bystander that he felt as if he were going to faint. He tottered as if about to collapse when two or three men standing near sprang to his assistance and gently lowered him to the ground. As they did so, he said "I am gone" and immediately lapsed into unconsciousness. Those were his last words and five minutes later he was dead. The corpse was carried to Atlanta on the night express.
