Zellars at Grantville. __ Judge and Mrs. S.L. Roan of Fairburn spent Sunday with their grandson, Charles Moseley Roan. __ Mr. John Gentry of Atlanta spent Sunday with his parents here. __ Miss Daisy Pennington of Fairburn is teaching school at St. Paul. __ DODSON News Miss Rubie Jones who has been in Heard county the past few weeks is expected home in a few days. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hyde spent Sunday with relatives near Happy Valley. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Moore have issued invitations to the marriage of their daughter, Maggie Lou, to Mr. John B. Sewell, the wedding to occur on the evening of April 7. ___ Mr. Tom Meadows of Cullman county, Ala., spent a few days recently with his uncle, Mr. J.R. Thurman. __ Mr. and Mrs. Butler of Douglas county spent the latter part of the week with their daughter, Mrs. Pierce Sewell. __ MT. CARMEL News Miss Mary Frances Turner visited her aunt, Mrs. John Payton Friday and Saturday and attended the closing exercises at Buckeye school. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ned Cavender of Welcome spent Sunday with Mr. F.L. Cavender and wife. __ Mrs. J.L. McKoy visited her brother, Mr. W.W. Cavender last week. Mr. Cavender, though not entirely recovered from his recent illness, is much improved. __ Mr. J.B. Strong went up to Madras last week to visit his stepfather Mr. Geo. Lewis, who has been quite sick. __ SARGENT News Saturday night, while he was away, some unknown parties attempted to burglarize the home of Mr. E.P. Warren, but the robbers were frightened away by shots from a 38 caliber S. & W. in the hands of his wife and sister. Nothing has been learned as to the identity or present whereabouts of the robbers. ____ The community was saddened the past week by the death of Mrs. Jim Barrentine. She leaves a husband, four children, a father and brothers to mourn her death. March 19th. ___ MIDWAY News Mr. Fletcher Eady and daughters were the guests of Mr. R.H. Eady last Sunday. __ Mr. Walt Stephens and family were the guests of Mr. Claude Barrow last Sunday. __ We are glad to know that Mrs. Alice Davis is convalescent at this writing. __ Mr. Will Kidd and family were the guests of Mr. L.M. Wiggins last Sunday. __ LONE OAK News After several days of confinement at home from serious indisposition, Mr. H.L. Culpepper is on the road to recovery. __ Mrs. Feraby Culpepper, after a tedious illness is slowly improving. __ The sympathies of our community are with our venerable friend, Mrs. Lucy A. Lee, who after a long life of energy and usefulness, is now suffering loss of sight from cataracts. __ TURIN News On Sunday night the writer spent the night with Mr. Wilson Whatley, son of Hon. Wm. Whatley. The latter is now in his 99th year, yet enjoys good health, with his mental faculities apparently unimpaired. He told the writer that his mother lived to be 108 years old and judging from his vigorous appearance, he gives promise of as many years as were allotted to his venerable mother. Mr. Whatley has a second wife; hence her age is not so great as that of her husband. ___ Miss Julia Harris is visiting her sister, Mrs. Joe Hutchinson at Decatur. __ Mrs. W.D. Hardy's health is now much improved. __ Miss Nannie Boyd is visiting her niece, Mrs. H.P. Landrum at Hapeville. __ Mrs. J.G. Brock and children have returned from a visit to her parents at Whitesburg. __ LUTHERVILLE News Miss Clare Braswell spent last week at Rocky Mount, the guest of her sister, Mrs. J.H. Dunlap. __ Mrs. H.P. Short spent a few days at Sargent last week with her father, Dr. Hood. __ MADRAS News Mrs. W.R. Cole is spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. Tate, near Welcome. __ Mrs. Jim Lewis spent Saturday night with her sister, Mrs. Z.R. Vineyard, near Sharpsburg. __ Mr. "Tip" Brooks of Atlanta spent Sunday night with his Uncle, Mr. W.T. Moore. __ NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS Mrs. W.B. Green of Fairburn is visiting her sister, Miss Della Reese, near town. ___ Mrs. Will Mattox of Florida is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Hendricks. __ Mrs. W.P. Gearreld is spending some time with her parents, Col. and Mrs. F.S. Loftin in Franklin. __ Dr. J.W. Daniels and wife of Franklin have been the guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. I.J. Stephens. ___ The many friends of Mr. Ellison Richards will regret to hear of the death of his venerable grandfather, Col. W.H. Ellison, which occurred yesterday morning at Shiloh, GA in the 82nd year of his age. He was one of Talbot county's most prominent citizens, a "gentleman of the old school" whose kind one rarely meets nowadays, and was widely known throughout the state. The funeral took place today. __ CITY SCHOOL CENSUS The law requires the taking of a school census for the city during the month of April and the Board of Education has elected Mr. C.B. Brown as enumerator. His duties will require him to visit every home in the city. In order that the work may be more quickly done, the board requests all parents to be able to give him, on his call, the following information: Name of Child, age, sex, over 10 years of age, and can read and write? Over ten years of age and can neither read nor write? Over 10 years of age and has never atttended school? Attended schoolmore than five months in 1907? These questions will be asked at each home. Ready information will be appreciated. T.E. She will spend several days in New Orleans in route and several days with her sister, Mrs. N.E. Dozier, at Marengouin, LA. _______ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, April 10, 1908 FUNERAL OF COL. W.H. ELLISON Columbus Enquirer-Sun 7th Inst. The funeral of Col. William Holmes Ellison was solemnized at Sardis church, Talbot county, Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.G. Harrison, the interment being in the Ellison burial ground at that place. A large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives were in attendance. Col. Ellison was a true type of the "old south" and with the passing away of his honest, upright christian gentleman there is removed from our midst one whose life was a loving benediction, whose high-minded purposes and noble aims were in inspiration to his fellow man, and whose refined and gengle influence was felt by all who came in contact with him, and has left its impress upon the community in which he lived. His father was one of the pioneers of Methodism in Georgia and he devoted his life to carrying on this work. He was a graduate of Emory College in the class of 1849, with Bishop Key, Rev. A.M. Wynn and others. He was a Confederate veteran and was with Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendering at Appomattox. His sister, Miss S.E. Ellison and children, Mrs. E.R. Richard and Mrs. G.J. Peacock and grandchildren, Mrs. Mitchell Lightfoot of Wilson, N.C.; Mr. Ellison Richards of Atlanta, Mrs. George Rowell of Macon, and two great grandchildren attended the funeral. _______ MIDWAY News Mrs. Amanda Eady has returned home, after a week to relatives in Heard County. __ Mr. Elbert Cash and family were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Eady last Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Melson of Cooksville, spent Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. J.C. Jackson. __ The ladies of this community enjoyed a quilting at Mrs. D.L.Hardegree's last Wednesday. __ Judge J.B. Ware of Corinth, was shaking hands with his many friends in this section Sunday. Judge Ware is ever ready to speak for his master and has done much good for the cause of christ. We regret to see him getting so feeble. ___ LOCAL News The many friends of Mrs. Eula Young Chestnut will regret to hear of her death from heart failure, which occurred suddenly on Wednesday of last week at her home in the second district. She was a lovable young woman and by her sweet disposition endeared herself to all who knew her. Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Young and the wife of Mr. Young Chestnut. Besides her husband, she is survived by an infant daughter about seven weeks old. ____ ORDINARY'S COURT The following business was transacted at the regular monthly term of the Ordinary's Court on Monday last: Last Will and Testament of Mrs. Ella C. Couch, admitted to probate in common form. Mr. Georgia Rigsby, administrator on the estate of J.T. Rigsby, deceased, granted letters of dismission. Twelve months support set apart to Mrs. Mary Bowden out of the estate of R.S. Bowden, deceased. Twelve months support set apart to Susie Thomas out of the estate of Jeff Thomas, deceased. Mrs. Zebuline Herndon Murray granted letters of administration on the estate of S.W. Murray, deceased. D.L. Puckett qualified as natural guardian of his minor children. ___________ GRANTVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Simms and daughter Kathleen of Montgomery are visiting at the home of Mr. J.R. Moses on Sunday. ___ PALMETTO News Mr. John Gentry of Atlanta has been quite sick the past week at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gentry. __ The many friends of Mrs. Jeff Askew, of Fayette county, will regret to learn of her sudden death, which occurred Friday night at her home near Bennett's Mill. She was a sister of Mrs. R.C. Rhodes. __ MORELAND News Mrs. Robert Jacobs has been on a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley McCollum at Thomaston. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brannon's sons, John and Abner are both ill with pneumonia. __ Misses Ethel and Blanche Rogers of Grantville, visited their grandmother, Mrs. Patman, last Saturday and Sunday. __ Mrs. P.A. Carmical has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wm. McLeroy at Newnan. __ ROSCOE News Mrs. T.J. King will leave tomorrow for Carrollton to visit her sister, Mrs. Hulsey. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Sewell went over to Happy Valley last Sunday and visited Mr. Robert Stamps and wife. __ NEWNAN HOME AFFAIRS Forty-three years ago today, Gen. Robt. E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. __ Dr. C.D. Smith of College Park was here the first of the week on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Sam Faver. __ Miss Frankie McCrory of College Park is visiting her grandparents, Capt. and Mrs. J.J. Goodrum. __ Misses Susie and Lula Barr have returned from a pleasant months' visit to relatives in New Orleans. __ Mr. W.C. McBride and family have been spending a week or so on their farm in Meriwether county. __ Miss Daisy Ellis of Greenville spent a couple of days this week with her sister, Mrs. Walter Welch. __ Mrs. Ida J. Milner left Monday for a months' visit to relatives at Savannah and Columbia, S.C. __ Capt. Tom Lewis has about recovered from his late illness and now is on a visit to his son, Mr. Homer Lewis in Atlanta. __ Mr. Walker Lane of Valdosta came up Wednesday to visit his father, Mr. T.A. Lane, who continues quite ill, we regret to learn. __ Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilkinson left last week for Borden Springs where they will spend the summer. Mr. Wilkinson will have charge of the hotel at that place during the coming season, being a large stockholder in the company which owns this valuable property. ___ CARROLLTON News Mr. Sterling Pitman, a veteran operative at Mandeville Mills, died Sunday of apoplexy. He was held in such esteem by the mill owners that they suspended operations to attend his funeral. ___ Col. and Mrs. J.A. Rhudy have had as their guests during the past few days their son-in-law and their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
