That we tender the sympathies of the entire camp to the families and friends of our departed Confederate companions. J.B. Goodwyn, Commander, Geo H. Carmical, Adjutant ________ IN MEMORY OF CHARLIE PAYTON On Feb. 6, 1908, just before the sun sank to rest, the gentle spirit of our beloved friend and cousin took its flight to the God who gave it. It is sad to give up father, husband, brother and son; but we should remember that the all wise god is too good to err and that Charlie has gone where there is no more sorrow, nor death, nor pain and is waiting and watching to meet his loved ones over there. During the thirteen months that he lay upon a bed of suffering he exhibited rare patience and fortitude. Just before the end came he said the only dread he had was in leaving his loved ones behind, his wife, mother, seven children, two sisters, and five brothers. It was our pleasure once to spend a couple of weeks in their home and we never knew a happier one. During his last illness he frequently said "we must not murmur, for god doeth all things well." He was born January 7, 1867 and in October 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Kilgo. They lived happily together until he was called to come up higher and be with Jesus. Their union was blessed with four girls and three boys, who together with his devoted wife, survive him. To them we would say, our heavenly father has said that he would be a "husband to the widow and father to the fatherless." Charlie was converted when a young man and united with the Baptist church. After he joined the Methodist church at Newnan, where he lived the life of a humble christian, doing whatever he could for his master. His father preceded him to the grave several years ago and the metting between father and son must have been a happy one....The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F.J. Amis at Elim, where our loved one was laid to rest to wait the resurrection morn. A Cousin.
