Pension payments for the 1924 totaled $229,994,777 or $333,017,723 less than for the previous year. Statistics just made public show that Civil War pensioners decreased 21,808 last year and now number 146,815, whole widows and dependents of Veterans of that war declined from 264,580 in 1923 to 253,136 in 1924. Spanish-American war, pensioners, however, increased 16,645 to 85,038, and the number of widow and dependent pensioners of this war advanced from 13, 67 to 16,104.
