Elijah Elmore Obituary "Minutes of the Georgia Synod" 15 November 1877 Death has again invaded our ministerial ranks and we are called upon to mourn the loss of a useful laborer in the Master's vineyard. Rev. E. Elmore was born in Newberry County, S. C. June 24, 1811 and departed hence May 16, 1877, aged 65 years, 10 months and 22 days. Feeling himself called to work of the ministry, after his removal to this State (Ga), he applied and was received as a home student by the South Carolina Synod and was licensed by that body in St. Andrews Church, Orangeburg District, Lexington, S. C. on the 17th day of November 1843, Rev John Bachman, DD being President, and Rev. Wm. Berly, Secretary. >From that time through laboring daily for the support of his family he pursued his studies with almost unremitting diligence, until a meeting of the S. C. Synod held in Sandy Run Church, Lexington District, S. C. of which convention Rev. John C. Hope was President, and Rev. George Haltiwanger, Secretary. He was, after due examination, regularly authorized by the Ministerium to preach the Gospel and administer the Sacraments according to the doctrines and usages of the Lutheran Church and was ordained at the above-mentioned place to the work of the Gospel ministry November 22, 1848 (cf above - the date 1854 is more likely accurate, since he was actually licensed only in 1848). Through preaching to isolated congregation and as a consequence unremunerated, he was a faithful laborer and was "instant in season and out of season." The wintry lasts of North Georgia and Alabama did not deter him from duty and through heat and cold and great physical infirmity he sought the scattered flock of those regions and gathered them into folds. At the same time he was "abundant" in labors in his own community and elsewhere. He was a man of wonderful energy and persevered through surrounded by many obstacles the devotion died not, his health failed and very reluctantly he was compelled to retire from the active duties of the ministry some time before his death and after he was "made perfect" through sufferings, the Master bade him come and receive his reward. Like the patriarchs when dying leaning upon his staff, he called his children around his bed and delivered to each his dying charge and summed up to all his weeping loved ones his final words of admonition; "My dying charge to you al is live right that you may died right." He was much afflicted for many years but he now rests from his labors and his works do follow him and he shall suffer never more. He has gone from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant. We mourn but he rejoices. The church has lost a conscientious devoted minister but he is not lost but only gone before. Write, "Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord." W. A. Tigner and H.
