Death of Mr. P. A. Herndon

The death of Mr. Pressley A. Herndon, whose illness has been referred to in 
previous issues of The Herald and Advertiser, occurred at his home near Handy 
on Saturday afternoon last.  He had been ill for some time with grip, but last 
week the attack developed into pneumonia, which finally terminated in his 
death, as stated above.

Mr. Herndon was one of Coweta’s most prominent and useful citizens, and 
universally esteemed by his neighbors and friends.  His kind heart, affable 
manner and upright character were qualities which endeared him to everyone.  
Had he lived two months longer, he would have been 63 years of age.

He was a gallant Confederate soldier, serving throughout the war with a 
faithfulness to duty and an intrepidity of bearing that earned him promotion 
before the close of hostilities.  He is survived by his wife and six children.

Some years ago he held the office of County Surveyor, and at the time of his 
death was a member of the Board of County Commissioners.

The funeral took place Sunday afternoon, and was largely attended, services 
being conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. J. Amis.  The remains were interred in 
the family burying ground.


Additional Comments:
Mr. Herndon’s name was Preston Anderson Horn Herndon, born May 13, 1838.  He 
was married to Ann Jones Amis Herndon and they are both buried at Stallings 
Cemetery at Powers Crossroad in Coweta County, Georgia.  He was the son of 
Edward and Nancy Brown Herndon.
