Rev. A. G. Smith, Sr. was born on August 30, 1776 in Cumberland County, VA, the son of Robert Smith, Jr. who was a soldier in the American Revolution, and Hannah Andrews Smith. In 1788, A. G. Smith, Sr. and his parents moved from Cumberland County, VA to Oglethorpe County, GA with many of their relatives. A. G. Smith, Sr. was a charter member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church near Crawford, Oglethorpe County, GA. Rev. A. G. Smith, Sr. was married on January 19, 1797 to Mary (Polly) Allen (1777-1857). He was ordained a deacon in 1811 by Bishop Francis Asbury and ordained an elder in 1812 by Bishop William McKendree of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the U. S. He died on January 18, 1852 and was buried in the Smith family cemetery near his home. I visited his restored ca. 1830 home and its adjacent family cemetery in 1983. It was owned at the time by a pharmacist and his wife. I have photographs of its interior and exterior, and the cemetery markers.
