Mary "Polly" Allen Smith: Birth: Dec. 21, 1777 Hanover County Virginia Death: Apr. 19, 1857 Monroe County Georgia Mary "Polly" Allen Smith was born December 21, 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia and later died April 19, 1857. She married Rev. Anthony Garnett Smith, Sr. on January 19, 1797. She and her husband are buried at the A. G. Smith family cemetery near their home in Crawford County, GA. She was the daughter of Daniel Allen (1728-1807) and Johanna Read/Reed Hill. Daniel Allen was a veteran of the American Revolution. In The Southern Christian Advocate on July 9,(?) 1857 appears the following obituary: Mrs. Mary Smith died, April 19 at the residence of her son Rev. Wesley F. [Fletcher] Smith in Monroe County, Ga. in her 80th year. She was the widow of Rev. Anthony G. Smith, daughter of Daniel Allen, of Cumberland County, Va., sister of the late Maj. Daniel A. Allen, of Pike County Ga., half sister of the late Dr. Hill & Rev. Cary Allen of the Presbyterian Church. For 54 years she had been a member of the M.[Methodist] E. [Episcopal] Church & a professor of religion; in her daily walk, adoring the doctrine of GOD her SAVIOR. Previous to her last sickness she exhibited that anxious patience of soul peculiar to the aged saint, anxious for her release, yet patiently waiting on the will of GOD. After she was stricken down by disease, and in daily expectation of death, the same sweet serenity of soul was manifested; the same calm, unfaltering trust in her Redeemer. In reply to a remark by the writer that one in youth and health might perhaps journey, but its power was needed in the hour through which she was now passing, she remarked, the veterans eye kindling with baby fire as she spoke – "O no, my son you are mistaken, I have tried the religion of JESUS for 54 years, and it is the best all the way through. It has blessed me in prosperity and health, strengthened me in sorrow, and trial, and now in death it is my all in all". With her own hands she closed her eyes and mouth, and "as gently shuts the eyes of day", she fell asleep in JESUS. "Thanks be to GOD, which giveth us the victory through our LORD JESUS CHRIST". -F.
