C. L. HARRIS It was a happy day for Cordele homes with their parents and children, and it was a happy day for Cordele schools, with their teachers and children, when the Cordele Lions Club expressed a very earnest wish that Cordele might have a P. T. A. , at that time, to talk to the community about this important work. Mrs. Charles Center accepted the invitation and met a large group interested parents and teachers at the Methodist Church in Cordele, where a P. T. A. was organized on November 16, 1938. Under the splendid leadership of Mrs. Thomas Nesbitt as president, the P. T. A. started will. This was the year of the tornado. The schools were laboring under very great disadvantages. Because of the loss of school buildings, classed were held in churches. The P. T. A. meetings was shifted from place to place. In spite of the handicaps of having no special place of meetings, starting late in the year and the organization itself being new to its members, the P. T. A. grew steadily and at the close of the year had a membership of one hundred and fifty. Too much praise cannot be given to its noble leaders who worked so valiantly and laid a sure foundation for the association. The second year, 1937-38, Mrs. H. G. Wiley was chosen as president. The P.T.A. had for its theme: A community knowing and planning for the heeds of its children. Its main objectives were: Developing leadership and building a more workable organization for the town; adult education through programs and study groups.A wonderful year's work was mapped out by Mrs. Henry Whelchel, the program chairman. Through the programs and through efficient leadership of the president, the P.T.A. now felt that their goals for which struggled so earnestly were in sight. The P.T.A. is not a money making organization, but it does stand ready whenever possible to help in a material way the many good causes for the betterment of the schools in Cordele. Within the last two years the P.T.A. has contributed to many worthy causes. These contributions have amounted to over $225.00. The theme for the third year, 1938-1939 is: A community lifting up the standards through education. As this new year begins under Mrs. C.C. Chappell, the president, the P.T.A.knows that in her capable hands the organization can but go forward, and that it will continue to be, as one member said, "the largest, livest organization in Cordele."
