Formed two years after the close of the World War, their nineteenth birthday came as Europe is again embroiled in conflict and as the the United States is increasing all its defense forces as a precautionary measure. The local company has been considerably increased in size during the past few months. The local unit is officially designated as "Company L 121st Infantry of the National Guard." They were Federally recognized for the first time on November 20th 1910 as "Company B, First Separate Bn, Inf. The following year they were redesignated as Company L of the 1st Infantry, later made a companyu in the 122nd Infantry and finally on June 9, 1924, given their present designation. Twice the local company has been called out in strike duty. The first occasion was the railroad strike in Fitzgerald in 1921 when they spent a week at this post. They were again called to duty in Porterdale and Covington during the textile strike of 1935. In 1936, when the tornado struck, Company "L" had a patrol of men in the tornado area within an hour after the storm struck. For five days and nights they remained on duty, aided after the first day by companies from Albany and Hawkinsville. Doing mainly traffic duty after rescue work was completed, the Guard made the amazing report that not a single accident occurred after they took charge. Walter B. Elliott, served as first commadner of the unit, being elected at the time of organization. Since that time Capt. John E. Matthews [later msde a Major], Capt. W. G. Fleming, and Capt R. L. Webb have headed the company. Capt. Webb being the present commander. Lieutenants Robert K. Gary and Samuel E. Cox command the two platoons, while Lieutenant M. E. Doyle is attached to the unit as an instructor. Other officers who have served with the company since its formation are; Lieutenants Ernest E. Purcell, George W> Wright, and John P. Hughes. Three men have served with the company since its formation. One is the present commander Capt. R. L. Webb, another is Lieutenant Sam Cox, while the third, John Hardy Stephens has refused all offers ot promotion and elected to remain a private. It was announced Monday night that the ex[ected encampmet here of the 159th Field Artillery regiment of the National Guard will not take place as expected. Due to lak of housing facilities in Cordele, the encampment will instead be held elsewhere, probably at Waycross, according to an announcement made last night by Capt. R. L. Webb of the local company "L", 121st Infantry of the National Guard. The local unit also discussed details of their weeks encampment. A routine inspection and simple ceremony marked the celebration of the 19th anniversary of Company "L". Capt. Webb made a few brief remarks and introduced several visitors to the company. After the "fall out" command, refreshments were served. PRESENT MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL COMPANY ARE [1939] SERGEANTS: First Sergeant, K. A. Waldrip Line Sergeant, John P.
