LULAMAE PERRY HOME DEMONSTRATION AGENT In the 1950 Crisp County Agricultural Program under Home and Community Improvement the second recommendation reads, "Improve, paint, and label names plainly on all mail boxes." This recommendation was set up for a two-fold purpose to help the general appearance of the county and especially to help buyers of produce locate farms during marketing season. Te Crisp County Home Demonstration Council under it's president, Mrs. Sam Byrd of the Ebenezer Club, discussed this recommendation at their first meeting this year and decided the job could be done more quickly through cooperation with the rural letter carrier and the people along each route. They voted to give a sterling silver award to the carrier on each route when all the mail boxes were painted and names printed plainly on them. SPIRES FIRST J. D. Spires, carrier on the Arabi route, was the first to receive one of the awards. This award, a silver compote, was presented Mr. Spires Friday afternoon at the council meeting by Mrs. Sam Byrd. All council members congratulated Mr. Spires for the fine job he had done. Not only are all boxes painted and names printed neatly, but every box is of standard type and all the posts are repaired and standing up straight and proudly. Mr. Spires divided a gallon of paint into two buckets and bought two paint brushes. He stopped at the first house on each side of Arabi and asked the family to paint their box and take the paint to the next camily to do the same. All the boxes were painted in about three days. All families having old type boxes, which open at the top, and those whose door had gotten torn off, bought new boxes. SIMILAR AWARDS Mr. Spires and the county HD agent tried several methods of getting names printed on the boxes looking for something that would work on all boxes and could be done quickly. While Mr. Spires was on a visit to his son in Kentucky the boy suggested the names used by the shipping department of a wholesale concern he worked for. The council bought two sets to be used by any if the rural carriers in the county. They are hoping to make similar awards to each if the Crisp County rural letter carriers in the near future when their routes are finished. Farmers have a little more time now, so let's everyone repair his mail ox and get the box painted.
