               GEORGIA GENERALS IN THE WAR
     Alluding to a statement in the Atlanta Constitution that General W. H. T.
Walker, whose monument is to be unveiled near Atlanta in a short time, was the
only Georgia general who was killed in the civil war, a correspondent of the
Augusta Chronicle exposes the error.
     Mr. F. M. Stovall, a prominent member of the Veteran;s camp in Augusta and
a survivor of the civil war, shows that this mistake is not only a historical
lapse, but does the State of Georgia an injustice.
     If this statement coming from such a source is allowed to pass uncorrected,
says Mr. Stovall, the uninformed might infer that these higher officers who
obeyed Georgia's call to defend her soil and that of her sister states, were
content to do their fighting at a long range.This is far from the tructh.
Besides the large percentage of our states General Officers who recieved wounds
in the armies of the Confederacy, no less than nine of them died on the field of
battle,as the following will show. 
[1] Brigadier General Francis S. Bartow, killed at First Manassas, July 21, 1861
[2] Brigadier General T.R.R. Cobb, killed at Fredricksburg, December 13, 1862
[3] Brigadier General Edward S. Tracey, killed at Port Gibson, May 1, 1863
[4] Brigadier James Desher. killed at Chickamauga, September 30, 1863
[5] Brigadier General Paul J. Semmes, killed at Gettysburg, Juky 2, 1863 
[6] Brigadier General Edward S. Willis, killed at Mechanicsville, May 1864
[7] Brigadier General George Doles, killed Bethesda Church, Va. June 2, 1864
[8] Major General William H.T. Walker, killed at Atlanta, July 22.1864
[9] Brigadier General V. B. Girardey, kill3e qt Petersburg August, 1864
