Bass of the Americus, Preston, and Lumpkin railroad informs us that work on the eastern division of the road is progressing as rapidly and satisfactorily as could be wished under the existing circumstances. The damages to the Flint River bridge by the late flood have been repaired, and he thinks that trains will be permitted to cross again by Friday next. When the river began rising he very wisely had a large supply of rails carried to the other side, and consequently the work of track laying has not been delayed by the accident to the bridge, but instead, has been pushed forward as rapidly as possible. Fifty-one miles of track have been laid on this end of the line, and as the surface gang follow close on to the track layers when work is completed as fast as is progresses. The grading has been finished to Abbeville, a distance of sixty miles,of that place, and if no delay occurs in the work on the bridge to prevent the carrying over of material, will reach there by September 1oth at farthest. The surveying corps have long since crossed the Ocmulgee river and are engaged in making preliminary surveys between Abbeville and points East Tennessee; Virginia and Georgia railroad, running lines to both McRae and McVillie, both of which places are striving hard to secure the road. The contract for the bridge over the Ocmulgee has been let, and altogether the work is progressing in a most satisfactory manner to the officials of the road. Hundreds of contented hands are engaged on the work and if everything continues to move along as smoothly as at the present we will reach, the ocean before we know it.
