Probate Judge Westbrook By MAC McLENORE Dispatch Staff Writer Friends, associates and others express condolences this morning after learning of the death of veteran Crisp County Probate Judge Elizabeth Westbrook. Miss Westbrook had served as ordinary and probate judge for the past 37 years. She was re-elcted in 1984 to her 10th consecutive term. State Rep. Howard Rainey of Cordel led the mourners. He said "Miss Westbrook was one of the most devoted public officials I've ever seen. Her duties as superintendent of elections was conducted real well and our county never had any challenges or questions as to voters rights or improprieties. "Her other duty as ordinary and later probate judge was very respected throughout the state, mainly because she treated all ticketed traffic violators the same regardless of pressured requests or where they came from" Mrs. Ovis Stephens, superior court clerkk, is a former teammate of Miss Westbrook. They played basketball together. "I've been knowing her for a long time. She was a fine person. She is going to be missed. She knew her job She's going to be sadly missed." Tax commissioner Sammie Farrow said "She ran a jamb-up office." He said that Miss Westbrook "was one of the finest probate judges in the state." "She was well qualified for that job. She did a real good job," Crisp Commission chairman W. M. Davis said, Informed of her death, davis said I'm sorry to hear that" He added "I always thought she was well qualified. Whitfield Forrester, Crisp's senior superior court judge, saaid "I have known Elizabth Westbrook for most of my life. She was a person of excellent character, very conscientious, with the idea of always being absolutely fair and impartial. She was a Christian lady and set an example for all of us. The community has suffered a great loss in Judge Westbrook's passing." Crisp Commissioner J. Reginald Barry called Miss Westbrook "one of the finest public officials I ever worked with in Crisp County." Barry is past chairman of the commission. She was dedicated to doing a good job. She helped a lot of people. The probate judge's office was her life and she just did an excellent job. The taxpayers and citizens are going to miss her very much, " he said. County administrator Bill Goff said that Mrs. Stephens was appointed probate judge for the purpose of acalling a special election to fill Miss Westbrook's unexpired term. That cll for election must be done within 10 days. Goff then read a prepared statement from the office of the commissioners. "Miss Westbrook will bb greatly missed because of her efficient and smoothly run office. The staement pointed out that Miss Westbrook began working for the late W. G. Fleming as a clerk in the ordinary office in 1935. She was elected probate judge for the first time in the mid-1940s. She was an active member of the probate cout judge's association and was "recognized throughout the state as one of the most outstanding probate judges." As election superintendent, Miss Westbrook supervised Crisp elections for 50 years. She, the statement read,"was respected by the local bar association as a fair and consistent judge who always followed the law." Sheriff E. W. Forrest said that her death was "a great loss because she was a good judge, was very efficient and didn't show any partiality, She knew the law" OBITUARY ELIZABETH H. WESTBROOK Miss Elizabeth H. Westbrook, 73 died today at her residence. A native of Cordele she was Judge of Probate Court of Crisp Couny for 40 years where she served as clerk for 10 years prior to becoming Judge. Survivors include several nieces and nephews including: Mrs Marcia W. Cannon of Birmingham, Ala.; Mrs. Elise W. Beck of Owatonna, Minn. Wde Hampton Westbrook III of Santa Clara, Cal.; and a cousin, Miss Nena Westbrook of Cordele. Funeral services will be announced at a later date. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery.
