Thomas Harrison Smith, according to his Civil War records was born in SC in 1826. He arrived in Cherokee /Lumpkin Co Ga. in 1846. He enlisted as a private in August of 1863 at Shiloa Ga. in Company D Cherokee Legion State Guards.He served in the nitre works until he was transferred to Company B Findley's Regiment/ Barretts Battn. in October of 1864. He surrendered at Atlanta in May 12, 1865.He was a farmer, large landowner, and miner. His love of mining took him all over the U.S. while his family remained on the farm in Yellow Creek Lumpkin/Dawson Co, Ga. Harriet Taylor, according to a Cherokee application of a first cousin and many filed affidavits, was the granddaughter of Abraham Childers (b 1760's N.C.) full Cherokee and wife Nancy Wilkerson (b 1776 SC) half Cherokee. Abraham and his brothers Gid and Lem and their sons: Levi and Henry all migrated to Bradley and MCMinn Co Tn from Greenville Co SC before 1820. Abraham's brothers and their sons were sent on the Trail of Tears. Abraham had already died, so Nancy Childers gathered up her unmarried children and escaped into Lumpkin Co Ga. She was there on the census for 1834. She died at the home of her daughter Nancy Childers Hubbard in 1862. Harriet's parents were from Spartanburg to Greenville Co SC to Lumpkin Co Ga before 1830.They remained in Lumpkin/Dawson Co all their lives and are buried at Liberty Baptist Church in Dawson Co. Harriet's grandparents: James and Rebecca Childers Taylor were large landowners in Greenville Co SC, as was her great grandfather William Taylor Sr. Additional Comments: Thomas Harrison and Harriet elizabeth Taylor Smith are buried at Ophir Baptist Church Cumming, Ga where they were members for many years.
