Bainbridge Post Searchlight

Mars Hill Christian Church was built about 1880 by the following citizens who 
made donations of $50:  Mr. Bennett B. Bell, Mr. John Daniel Harrell, Mr. 
Thomas T. Mills, Mr. Henry Boutwell and possibly others.  The property was 
owned by Mrs. Thomas (Sarah Dollar)Mills, an inheritance from her father, Mr. 
Blackman Dollar.

The building was built to be used both as a church and a school.  A small log 
cabin had previously been used as a school house.  The building is still in 
good condition but not being used.  The plates and posts are pegged together.

A new church was built about one mile from the first in 1906.  The property was 
deeded by Mr. R. Daughtry witnessed and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mills.  Mr. R. 
James Bell was Justice of the Peace.  Mr. W. R. Harrell sawed the lumber for 
the building.  Mr. S. H. Salter, Mr. W. C. Harrell, Mr. Ben Bell and Mr. W. R. 
Harrell were trustees of this church.  "Uncle" Lamb Gainous was lamp lighter 
for many years.

A large number have been members of this church.

Services are held every first and third Sundays with Rev. Paul Stewart of 
Tallahassee, retired minister, serving for several years.

The old church book was destroyed, but among those who have preached are: W. E.

T. McGuire 1921; Chester Williamson 1922; J. H. Barfield 1924; P. C. Howell 
1929; Howard Matheny 1932; Harold Miles 1940; Bruce Nay 1936; Frank Perry 1947; 
T. W. Salter 1953; R. M. Mounts 1946; R. L. Hinely 1909; R. L. Philpott 1919; 
Harry J. Berry 1934; Woodrow Jackson 1958; Sam P. Jones 1944; C. M. Driskell 
1957; J. W. McAdams 1955; Gerald Culverson 1938 and Franklin Shumake 1956.
