Frank Battles, Jr., former partner of Battles and Metcalf Lumber Co., died at his residence Sept. 21 after a lengthy illness. He was 76. Services were held Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Short, Dr. James T. Burrell, and Dr. Don Duvall officiating. Burial followed at Oak City Cemetery and Bruce Woodbery, Tony Vacinek, Joe Higdon, Bruce Mann, Melvin Ehrlich, and Bill Edison served as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were all members of the Baraca Sunday School class at First Baptist Church. Furnishing family cars were Mrs. Walter Floyd, Paul Ragan, Raleigh Rollins, Jim Stone, Harold Lambert, and Fran Battles. Mr. Battles was born in Decatur County on Feb. 1, 1913, and lived here his entire life. Partner of Battles and Metcalf for over 40 years, he worked at Stones, Inc. as sales manager of Central Supply when his company was purchased by Stones. He also worked for Edison Realty co. of Bainbridge several years until his retirement. Mr. Battles served on the Bainbridge City School Board for several years and was the second president of the Bainbridge-Decatur County Jaycees. He was the founder of the Sons of the American Revolution Bainbridge Chapter and was a member of Magna Charta Society. He was a deacon of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, was the Sunday School Superintendent for the intermediate department as well as the Sunday School Supt. for the entire church. He was a trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children's Homes for five years and was chairman of the building committee during the construction of the Shell Annex and the educational building at First Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Hazel Wilson Battles of Bainbridge; one son, Frank Battles III, of Bainbridge, three daughters, Catherine Ann Nelson of Bainbridge, Susan Phinney of Atlanta, and Margaret Spooner of Donalsonville; 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
