Harrell Sept. 19, 1918 - March 23, 2002 Funeral services for W.D. “Cuz” Harrell, 83, of Bainbridge were held Tuesday, March 26, at the Black Jack Baptist Church with the Reverends Claude Smithmier, Joe Beauchamp and Jimmy Adamson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Pat Phillips, Roger Tingler, Charlie Knox, Ray Hendrix, Harry Williams, Charles Barrett, Watson Sasser and Harvey Hull serving as active pallbearers. All members of the American Legion and Auxiliary were honorary pallbearers. Mr. Harrell died Saturday, March 23, at Macon Northside Hospital. He was born in Decatur County and lived here most of his life. A graduate of West Bainbridge High School, he worked for many years with The Post-Searchlight and The Tallahassee Democrat, then was employed as a brakeman with the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the 121st Infantry Unit in the European theater during World War II. He became a Veterans Service Officer in the late 1950s and after serving 30 years, retired in 1981. He also served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, assisting families in contacting their sons in service. An active member of American Legion Post #62, he held many offices on the local, state and national level including Post Commander, State Commander, and for 35 years served as National Executive Committeeman from Georgia. He also served four terms as a member of the State Board of Veterans Services. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post #4904, and active in the Black Jack Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Agnes Sasser Harrell; four sons, David Harrell of Atlanta, Bill Harrell of Albany, Larry Harrell of Statenville, and Glenn Harrell of Bainbridge; four daughters, Pat Underwood of Stockbridge, Deedy Harrell of Peachtree City, Susan Driggars and Jane Kinchen, both of Bainbridge; two sisters, Curtis Butler and Cotele Prance, both of Bainbridge; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, American Legion Department Headquarters, c/o Adjutant Charlie Knox, 3035 Mount Zion Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281. Cox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
