J. Stanley Friends of a lifetime gathered Thursday afternoon at four o'clock at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church for the simple but deeply impressive funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Frances Chason Martin, age 87, whose death occurred about four thirty o'clock Thursday morning at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. A. J. Stanley. Mrs. Martin's death was attributed to a fall she sustained several weeks ago, breaking her hip. The church was virtually filled and large quantities of floral tributes were sent by friends for one who occupied an abiding place in their affections by reason of a character that appealed to the fine and enobling things of life. Services were conducted by the Rev. Harvey Wells, of West Bainbridge, assisted by the Rev. Henry Sullivan, of this city. The body was laid to rest in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mrs. Martin was born April 10, 1852, the daughter of the late John Jackson Chason and Mary Elizabeth Chason, prominent citizens of Decatur County, who came here early in life from the Carolinas. She lived her entire life here and on February 14, 1867, she became the wife of Epluribus Jackson Martin. Mr. Martin served with distinction in the Confederate Army under Col. Subers, of Company "C". Her father, the late John Jackson Chason, served with an honorable and valiant record in the Indian Wars, in Florida, Mexico and the Okefenokee Swamp. At the outbreak of the Civil War, when he was sixty years old, he served in the Confederate Army under Colonel Wimberley and died in a hospital at Forsyth, Ga., from a gun shot wound. Mrs. Martin had the distinctive honor of being a real Daughter of 1812 and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and as far as is known, is the only living real daughter of the Bainbridge Chapters of these organizations. She was a devout Methodist and an active and interested member of Sutton Chapel. She often related to her friends and family many interesting incidents of the Civil War days. Her death removed a lovely Christian character from the community. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. D. E. Brown, of Brinson, Ga., Mrs. H. H. Hutto, of Decatur, Ga., and Mrs. W. A. Burnum, of Climax, Ga., and two sons, Wesley H. Martin, of this city, and Willie L. Martin of Panama City, Fla. Twenty-eight grand children, several great-grand children and three great- great-grand children also survive her. E. W. Cox Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
