Wheat Prominent Citizen, Dies; Last Rites Held Funeral services for Dr. Robert Forne Wheat, 77, who died in a local hospital last Thursday after an illness of several weeks, were held Friday, September 6th. Services were conducted by the Reverend James T. Burrell, assisted by Dr. B. Frank Cochran and Dr. Charles Bishop at the First Baptist Church. Interment followed in Oak City Cemetery with E. W. Cox and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. A native of Pearl River County, Mississippi, Dr. Wheat had resided in Bainbridge since 1906 and was one of the most prominent citizens. he had been associated with the Riverside Hospital and Clinic here since 1918, and served for a number of years as a member of the State Board of Medical Examiners. He held membership in the Georgia Medical Association, Southern Medical Association and the Decatur-Seminole County Medical Association. He was also chairman of the Decatur County Board of Health. Dr. Wheat was a trustee of Shorter College at Rome; chairman of the loan committee of the board of directors of the First State National Bank; chairman of the Bainbridge Board of Trustees for the city schools, and was chairman emeritus of the board of deacons of the First Baptist Church. He was also a member of Orion Lodge No. 8 A. & F. M. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sarah Alice Chason Wheat; one son, Osler C. Wheat of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. John T. McCall, Jr. of Rome, Mrs. W. A. Wardell of Charlotte, N. C., and Mrs. Carl S. Fryer, Jr. of Quincy, Fla.; one brother, B. L. Wheat of Poplarville, Mississippi, and three sisters, Mrs. Monroe Stewart of Poplarville, Mississippi, Mrs. Hiram Newman and Mrs. J. L. Rainville, both of Bogalusa, La. Active pallbearers were Frank Jones, Reuben Reynolds, R. E. Rowan, Herbert Nussbaum, Gerard Kwilecki, Dr. Earl DuPree, Herman Lee Metcalf and James Penny. Serving as an honorary escort were all ordained deacons of the First Baptist Church, officers and directors of the First State National Bank; members of the Decatur County Medical Association, trustees of the Bainbridge Schools, and trustees of the Decatur County Board of Health.
