He was born in Yinzhou, Anhui Province, China and grew up in Nanjing, China. His father having died when he was twelve, Mr. Shen found himself responsible for his infant brother and mother, and raised himself up, becoming a graduate of Fudan University with a degree in Journalism. He then worked as the Press Secretary and Personal Assistant for Shen Yi, the Mayor of Nanjing, then the capital of China. After the Communist takeover in 1949, he was sent to Dalien, China to supervise the establishment of government offices there. Subsequently, he was appointed to teach the children of goverment leaders in the Southeastern Region of China. In 1958, he was labeled a counter- revolutionary, and sent to a concentration camp in the desert of Qinghai, China for 4 years, where he endured psychological and physical torture. Afterwards, he returned home to Shanghai without papers and under house arrest for the next 22 years, when he was made to sweep the city streets while being abused and to suffer public beatings at the hands of the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. In 1980, after Deng Xiao Peng returned to power, Mr. Shen was deemed "rehabilitated" without recompense or apology. He then returned to teaching at Shanghai Evening University until 1987, when he retired due to illness. When the Bamboo Curtain lifted, Mr. Shen encouraged his daughters to escape, and most fortunately, he arrived on a visiting visa to the U.S. in 1989, when the Tienamin Massacre occurred, and the President allowed Mr. Shen and other Chinese immigrants to remain in the U.S. as refugees. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Thursday at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Mr. Shen is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pu Yu Xiu, and his three daughters, Shen Hui, Shen Yang and Shen Qi, their husbands, respectively, Chen Huai Min, Joseph Valles and Dale Wheeler, and a brother, Shen Yi Quen, and sister-in-law, Hui Fang Ran, in Nanjing. Mr. Shen was a person who loved life and always had an open heart for people. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at A. S. Turner and Sons.
