At the age of 22 he entered the army in the War of 1812, and was a Captain of Volunteers. In the Seminole troubles in 1817, he served under General Andrew Jackson with the rank of Brigadier General, and was then a young man of 27 only. When the troubles were settled, he returned to his law practice; in 1835 he was elected to the 24th Congress; in 1837 re-elected without opposition; and at the close of that term retired from public life, settling in Decatur, Georgia, intending to lead the peaceful life of a country gentleman; but a few months later was thrown from his horse and killed.
