The only directions we have to the Arnold Family Cemetery are those Franklin Garrett left us: "south side of Old Covington Road just east of Lithonia, near Georgia Railroad, 16th District." 1 Unfortunately, that is not enough of a description to locate the cemetery considering he gives no land lot and considering how much the Lithonia area has changed since he visited the cemetery in 1932. Old Covington Road in that area has numerous junkyards, used car dealers, automotive repair shops and the like, making the discovery of this cemetery very difficult. When a cemetery is out in the country, it is sometimes discovered when developers accidently discover it while clearing land. But this area is already developed. A brief description of the property. Again, all we have to go on is Franklin Garrett's work. He reported three grave: Sallie Arnold who died in 1882, her son William F. who died the same year in infancy and Iler Jenkins who died in 1886. A brief description of the people buried on the property. Sallie Arnold was the first wife of Rev. W. H. Arnold. We know she lived in Lithonia in 1880, according to the census. She was then 27, her husband was 31 and their daughter Mary was 10. Their son William was born in 1881, so he did not show up on the 1880 census. Sallie and William died with two weeks of each other (he was 4 months old), so we can assume some disease common to the age killed them both. In that time period it could have been thyphoid fever, yellow fever, or any of a number of communicable diseases. Rev. Arnold probably remarried and is buried somewhere else with his second wife. 2 Continuing efforts to locate cemetery. We will continue to search for this cemetery. Inquiries will be posted on the internet on various message boards in hopes there is someone out there who may know where it is. The historic planner for DeKalb county (David Cullison) also informs us of any information that may be useful. References: 1. Franklin Garrett's Necrology, 1932 2. 1880 U.S. Census, DeKalb County
