Confederate Cemetery, Dekalb County, GA CONFEDERATE CEMETERY, DEKALB COUNTY, GA Submitted: 09-14-2000 Confederate Veterans Buried in Stone Mountain City Cemetery, intersection of East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Silver Hill Drive, and Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, Georgia (DeKalb County) Compiled September 2000 by Chris Davis, Historian, The Confederate Memorial Camp 1432, Georgia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stone Mountain & Decatur, Georgia, TheCarving@juno.com. Confederate service of each veteran is supplied in [brackets] after his grave stone information. At the front of the cemetery are the graves of 150 unknown Confederate soldiers who died as casualties of the battle of Atlanta in the summer of 1864. Their graves are marked by small white stones. Veterans Administration markers record the numbers of soldiers buried in each row. Georgia historical marker 044-42A inside the cemetery entrance records the following: Here sleep, known but to God, approximately one hundred and fifty Confederate soldiers, most of whom died from disease, or wounds in the Confederate hospitals that were located near this spot. Some were killed in a skirmish with Federal raiders near here on July 19, 1864. Although Federal troops raided and burned part of this city, Confederate hospitals were not molested. Brave and gallant Confederate women rendered valuable aid in caring for soldiers in Confederate hospitals here and elsewhere. After the war, two DeKalb Confederate veterans, Ransom M. Thompson and Dr. John L. Hamilton, donated large tracts of adjoining land to increase the cemetery's size to more than 16 acres. Both Thompson and Hamilton are buried there.
