DeKalb County GaArchives Cemeteries.....Shaw Family Cemetery - Complete Survey ************************************************ Copyright. From the intersection of Old Covington and Turner Hill Rd., go east on Old Covington just over 1/2 mile. Just before the E-Z Pay Motors at 7762 Old Covington there is a blocked off driveway. There is room for a car to pull in and park. Walk around the chain across the drive and on the left is a chain link fence, which surrounds the cemetery. There is a gate in front. There has been no vandalism other than one stone, which is knocked over. Only the tall stones are visible over the overgrown grass so finding all the stones can be hit or miss. In the winter there may be more visible. Jan 14, 1883 Nov 14, 1947 Additional Comments: Franklin Garrett’s transcription also notes a Vivunodell Shaw (infant) and an Addie Bell Shaw (also infant) whose stones I did not see but they could have been hidden in the tall grass or been on the stone that was toppled over. He described several other visible graves with no inscribed markers. There were several uninscribed markers but no noticeable graves beyond those. Transcribed by Mary West June 2004 ================================== Additional notes from Beth shaw208@comcast.net Shaw Louisa Aug 31, 1842 Feb 26, 1932 (Louisa Frances Shaw - the family intentionally put the wrong birthdate on her tombstone so that it would appear she was older when her first child was born. She was actually born in 1845 or 1846. She and her family claimed she was older throughout her adult life from the time her oldest son was born. Louisa was deeded a great deal of property by the father of her children - including the land in the area of this cemetery - . Her youngest son (Willie E. Shaw) eventually sold the land for $17 per acre for I20 to be built.) Cobb Mary A. Jan 30, 1837 Feb 19, 1909 (Mary Amanda 'Nannie' Shaw - sister of Louisa. We have her married name as Dobbs. I would be interested in knowing which is correct.) Shaw Infant Feb 15, 1905 Feb 15, 1905 Infant Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W. E. Shaw (granddaughter of Louisa. Parents are Willie E and Lula Bartlett Shaw. Willie E Shaw: July 20, 1878 - October 1953 and Lula Bartlett: June 19, 1880 - June 1972.) Shaw Eliza E. Mar 22, 1848 Jun 22, 1906 Wife of D. C. Shaw (Eliza E. McKinney - wife of David C. 'Bud' Shaw (born 1848). Bud Shaw was Louisa's brother. I don't have a death date on him, however he was listed with his family on the Dekalb County Census in 1880. I wonder if he's one of the unmarked graves you saw in the cemetery). Long Joseph Aug 13, 1964 Aug 16, 1990 'Country Boy' Long Minnie C. Apr 10, 1926 Apr 18, 1969 (???) Long Nathan E. Aug 27, 1887 Dec 17, 1982 (Louisa's grandson. His mother was Louisa's only daughter Mary Ann Shaw, (January 29, 1863 to October 1942) married to James Washington Long (I think of Dekalb County - born about 1856).) Long Leila B. Apr 22, 1897 Mar 31, 1979 (??? probably Nathan's wife ???) Long Edgar A. Jan 14, 1883 Nov 14, 1947 (Louisa's grandson. His mother was Louisa's only daughter Mary Ann Shaw, married to James Washington Long. Edgar A. Long married Mary Teasley. They had 7 children.) Additional Comments: Vivunodell Shaw is Vivian Odelle Shaw (September 22, 1909 - July 14, 1910). Addie Belle Shaw (October 23, 1907 - December 18, 1908) Both of these infants were Louisa's grandchildren - they are daughter's of my great-grandfather, Columbus Turner 'Lum' Shaw (April 13, 1875 - April 17, 1954) and his wife Minnie Zephorah Wood Shaw (October 6, 1879 - April 20, 1973). Lum Shaw was one of Louisa's sons. His oldest son was Grady Columbus Shaw of Milstead, Rockdale County, my grandfather.
