Johnson This company was made up of men from the Stone Mountain area of Gwinnett and Dekalb Counties, and several men were from Heard County. The primary source for the following information is the Compiled Service Records, GA Dept. of Archives and History, drawer 254 boxes 31-35, with additional information from the records of the Soldier Roster Commission, GA Dept. of Archives and History, RG-58-2-26 box 83 Loc. 3297-15. Information was also taken from private letters, county histories, and local newspapers when available. Also used were the UDC records of interment of Confederate Veterans of Gwinnett County. PR indicates information taken from pension records. RCS indicated information taken from the Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861 - 1865. She was a GA resident since 1845. She and J.B. Andrews married 10/22/65 in Gwinnett Co. J.B. died 11/13/91 in Gordon Co. Witness W.N. Garner stated that J.B. was shot through the rt. Lung at Ceder Creek. They were both wounded and disabled in that battle, and both at home when the war ended. He also stated that he had been present at J.B. Andrews' wedding. She arrived a few days latter and visited his grave there. He was taken with "Brain Fever". They married 3/10/51, she had been a GA resident since 10/12/29. Witness' John T. Atkinson, John W. Leopard, and W.P. Wynn. Eliza Bagwell of Lawrenceville, appointed John D. Bagwell as attorney in fact with authority to receive her pension. He served in the 12th GA from Spring of 1862 until he resigned 7/18/62. He left the command at Chattanooga, TN. His resignation was accepted by Gen. J.P. McCown. Witness' Joseph Gibson and N.M. Lankford. Gibson was home on wounded furlough and Lankford was home on sick furlough at the time of the surrender. Formerly a farmer, now disable. Has a wife living and 2 children, Boy age 34, Girl age 20. Daughter lives with him. Witness W.A. Lester of Gwinnett Co. near Lawrenceville, stated that Bradford served over 2 years and was present at the surrender. Widow Mary F. Bradford applied Gwinnett Co. 2/28/01. She was born 12/36 in Gwinnett Co. They married in 1856. David Bradford died 9/8/96 in Gwinnett Co. Witness Andrew Garner of Gwinnett Co. stated that he, Garner, was captured 15 days before the surrender, he thinks that Bradford was present at the surrender. PR Widow applied Gordon Co. 8/26/19. She had been a GA resident all her life, 75 years. T.J. Brown married Martha Jeffrs 12/10/65 in Gwinnett Co. T.J. died 9/8/18. J.T. was at home at the time of the surrender. He had been given a 30 day furlough by Capt. Johnson while at Savannah, in order to carry his Brother home. He made several attempts to return to the command, but the enemy was between home and the command. Witness J.W. Leopard of Walton Co. stated that he was present at the surrender, but that Brown was at home, having left the unit in Savannah 6/64 on furlough. Pension was not allowed. Brown William, Pvt., Enlisted 5/13/62, Franklin, Present thru 11/1/64, Clothing issue 11/27/64. PR Widow Mary C. Brown applied Hart Co. 4/1/97. They married 10/55. She was born in SC, a resident of GA since 11/58. William died 12/64 of Pneumonia. Witness' B.F. Tollerson and C.W. Lesley of Heard Co. stated that Brown contracted Pneumonia and died of said disease at Camp Buist near Savannah. Witness with him during term of service and with him when he died. Enlisted into Capt. Johnson's Co. She stated that he was under age 18, and could not serve outside the state. He could not go to VA. He reenlisted into 2ed GA Res. W.E. Brown died 5/12/03 in Fulton Co. Widow M.E. Brown married I.L. Teat 11/18/15 in Dekalb Co. I.L. Teat died 2/15/29. M.E. Brown Teat died 7/26/32. Witness J.M. Nash, a member of 2ed GA Res. confirmed information. Witness H.F. Holmes of Chattanooga, a member of C Co. 12th GA Battalion stated that he knew W.E. Brown of Stone Mountain and Lawrenceville, and served with him in the 12th GA. They served together in Savannah, W.E. Brown took the place of Starling E. Brown. William E. Brown 5/14/45 - 5/12/03 & Wife Mary Dickens 1840 - 1932 both buried Shadowlawn or New Lawrenceville Cemetery. He was born 1833 in Campbell Co., she was born 9/28/41 in Dekalb Co. He served about 8 months and was ruptured at Thunderbolt, GA and was discharged at Griffin, GA. He later served with Capt. Camp paid for her funeral and applied for reimbursement. George was born 1814 in KY. George Cole married Sarah Amanda Nash at Stone Mountain, GA. George Cole died 1866 at Augusta, GA. At the time of application, she had no family. She stated that George lost his right arm in about the last fighting of the war. He came home in the Summer of 1865 his arm not cured up. She thought that his unit surrendered at Bentonville, NC. Witness Andrew Garner of Gwinnett Co. stated that he and George enlisted together 5/62, and George remained with the company until 9/64 at Savannah. He was then swapped off from the company for another man, and from 9/64 he was a member of 1st GA Reg. PR Widow applied 9/3/10 Gwinnett Co. she was born 1832 in GA. William P. Dickens married Miss. Caroline Stone 10/25/51 in Dekalb Co. William died 6/1/99 in Gwinnett Co. Caroline died 9/2/26 in Gwinnett Co. Eli Dickens applied for funeral expense. Caroline stated that William enlisted 8/1/63 at Charleston, SC, that he was home sick at the time of the surrender. He left the command at Cedar Run, VA, he was sent home on a 60 day sick furlough 11/64. He had Dropsy which he contracted in the service. He was never able to return to the command. Witness J.T. Dougherty applied Fulton Co 9/15/19. She a GA resident since 1866 She stated that T.L. was a prisoner at Wars end, that he was captured at Cedar Creek 10/19/64, and sent to Point Lookout, MD. T.L. died at Tallapoosa, GA. Mrs. E.A. died 2/20/32. Witness' Joseph Gibson and W.P. Brown stated that they had known T.L. all his life. They stated that he was captured at Fisher's Hill. Dunbar John, Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Newnan, Master Blacksmith, Detached to Co C from Co A 3/18/63, 11/1/64 listed as deserted. 1870 Census list John Dunbar age 39 born Ireland, living Coweta Co. PR Widow applied Coweta Co. 10/27/14, she had lived in GA all her life. John Dunbar married Louisa F. Askew 10/3/58 in Coweta Co. John died in Coweta Co. 9/19/14. Witness' J.E. Robinson, Alvan D. Freeman, and John B. Goodwyn all state that John Dunbar was present at the surrender as a member of A Co. He had followed A Co. when it was transferred to VA, while C Co. was left to do coastal duty at Savannah. Freeman, an attorney, and Goodwyn, a member of the state legislature, both stated in a sworn affidavit dated 9/17, that they were in possession of Goodwyn's Ord. Sgt. book with a partial muster roll began 4/2/65, but never completed due to the retreat, and that Dunbar is on the list. They also stated that Dunbar was among 4 or 5 members of the Co. who refused to be paroled. Alvan Freeman wrote a letter to the pension board in which he was very upset over the desertion on Dunbar's record. Dunn James G., Pvt., Enlisted 11/14/63, Charleston, SC, In hospital Charlotte, NC 9/10/64, 11/1/64 listed as absent sick. 1850 Census list James Dunn age 5 living Gwinnett Co. in the household of Daniel Dunn, a farmer. PR Applied 4/10/95 Gwinnett Co. born Gwinnett Co. 9/45. Enlisted James Island, SC 10/63, served 12 months, came home on furlough and did not go back. Joined Grahams Scouts for 6 months, discharged at time of surrender. Dunn was a farmer, and was not married. Witness W.P. Wynn lived by Dunn. Pension not allowed. Applied again in 1899. Stated that the furlough was for sickness, and when able, joined Grahams Scouts. Witness John W. Leopard. Pension not allowed. Applied again in 1900. Witness Peter F. Atkinson stated that Dunn had joined Grahams Scouts in Milton Co. 6 or 7 months before the end of the war. He was turned down again. Applied again in 1907. Witness James J. Green was not present at surrender, and stated that Dunn had gone home sick 10/64. Green was present when Dunn went to the hospital sick. Witness Peter F. His death resulted from wound, he died at home in Dekalb Co. 1/23/88. His leg turned black from knee to ankle, shingling in places as large as your hand, baring the bone plainly up to view. Sworn statement from 2 sons, O.H. Johnson and F.E. Johnson, ages 30 & 24, dated 3/2/93 tells how their Father, Thomas Johnson, was never able to get around very well, and suffered and died from his bad leg. Witness' Andrew Garner and J.T. Jordan stated that Johnson was wounded in train collision was sent off and never returned. Theo W. Davis also a witness. Witness Luther Mason stated that the members of Capt. G.W. Johnson's Company had a collision in route from Augusta to Chattanooga 6 miles above Ringold. Thomas Johnson was caught under a smashed box car. He was trapped for over an hour. When we extricated him from under the wreck, he was badly bruised and scalded from the back down. He was senseless for a long time. Witness assisted in carrying him off and did not think that he would survive. Witness knew him before and after the injury and he was never the same. Atkinson stated that they were close neighbors, and that Leopard served 3 years and was a good and faithful soldier, and was discharged at the surrender. (J.T. According to family information William Medlock died on 8 February 1910and his widow, Permelia Medlock filed for her widow's pension. She was granted the pension. In 1914 the state of Alabama, Pension Bureau brought charges against Permelia stating that her husband was a deserter, therefore, she was not eligible for a pension. After several hearings and affidavits, in a decision on 4 February 1915 Judge F. S. Ferguson of the Morgan County, Alabama State Board of Pension Examiners approved the pension in question in case #4488 with the comments "W. H. Medlock, the husband of the beneficiary, is charged with having deserted from Thunderbolt, July 18th, 1864. Mrs. Medlock offers her own and the affidavit of a comrade of her husband which, by inference, contradict the charge. The charge itself is rather vague and I give the pensioner the benefit of the doubt. I order that she is eligible to the pension." Tweety's acquaintances signed a petition to the GA. Pension Board 11/03, asking that he be granted a pension. PR Applied 2/8/89 Dekalb Co. GA resident since 5/23/47. He stated that on 5/1/64 was thrown from a caisson at Savannah while on Battalion drill and hurt Back and Hip in the fall. Said wound or hurt permanently disabled me from doing any manual labor. Statement from doctor agrees. One document dated 2/9/89 signed by Gov. J.B. Gordon. Applied Fulton Co. 1/8/03. PR Allowed pension in Dekalb Co. 1/11/05. He had been a GA resident since 10/13/48. Stated 1/11/07 that he was 69 years old. He died 12/8/25 in Dekalb Co. Walston Eli, Pvt., Enlisted 8/7/63, LaGrange, Detached at Read Bluff, SC 2/64, Gun shot wound arm 10/19/64 Ceder Creek, Sent to hospital at Cuthbert, GA, Age 41. PR Applied Heard Co. 3/23/92. Resident of GA since 10/16/26. Shot by mini ball at Cedar Creek 10/19/64. Ball entered left arm and lodged in left shoulder blade. Ball had to be cut out of shoulder. Arm useless at time of application, also bowel problems while in Army resulted in hard lump in stomach. Witness' B.F. Tollerson, C.W. Lesley, and W.P. Lesley of Heard Co. all state that they were aware of Walston's stomach problem before he was wounded. Tollerson was his mess mate. W.P. Lesley saw him after he was wounded, before he was carried from the battlefield. Living 1899. Wells James H., Pvt., Enlisted 5/7/62, Stone Mountain, Continuously absent sick with rheumatism, Deserted 2/20/64. 1850 Census list James H. Wells age 13 living Gwinnett Co. in the household of Abner Wells, a farmer. PR Applied 12/20/99 Carroll Co. Born 3/19/36 Gwinnett Co. GA resident all of life except a few months in 1888 in AL. Lives with Son in law, Wife helpless, must depend on Son and Son in law, a farmer all his life. Stated that he was last with the command about 2/20/64 at Savannah. He was sent to the hospital at that time from disease brought on by complications from Measles and chronic diarrhea and exposure. Sent to Macon hospital after a few weeks. Was sent home to Clayton Co. on a 60 day furlough about 4/1/64. Dr. Parker certified on furlough that he was still unable to return when 60 day furlough was up. The Doctor continued to certify extensions until the war was over. Was not able to go to Atlanta for parole until May when Father in law carried him. Statement certified by Carroll Co. Ordinary 1902. Witness' Thomas L. Dougherty & W.R. Raney. Raney thinks that Wells was at home on sick furlough at the time of the surrender. Raney was convalescent at the hospital, and was detailed to nurse Wells until he left the hospital in a few weeks. Wells moved to Haralson Co. and applied for transfer of pension to that county 1/9/04. Drew 1907. West George W., Pvt., Enlisted 1/2/64, Stone Mountain, With section in FL 2/64, Surrendered Appomattox 4/9/65. PR Widow applied 10/22/12 in Green Co. She was born 8/15/53 in GA. George W. West married Julia C. Parker 12/22/67 in Dekalb Co. George died 12/4/05 in Green Co. She stated that he was present at the surrender, and never captured. Witness W.P. Brown of Dekalb Co. had known both George and Julia all their life. Brown stated that both he and West were present at the surrender. White James T., Pvt., Enlisted 5/1/62, Stone Mountain, Blacksmith, Detached to Capt. Hanvey's Command 11/62 & 12/62, With section in FL 2/64, Transferred to Capt. Maxwell's Battery 8/1/64. PR Applied Dekalb Co. 9/14/03 67 years old, born Henry Co. Transferred to 1st GA Reg as an artificer. Witness W.P. Brown stated that White transferred to 1st GA Fall of 64 by consent of officers. Virgal A. Veal stated that he had left and went to hospital in the Fall of 64, and saw White no more until after the war. White stated that his family consisted of Self, Wife, 2 Girls 16 & 19, and 1 Son. He also stated that he had turned some land over to his boys. Widow applied Dekalb Co. 10/28/16. James White died 1/14/16 in Dekalb Co. James married Eliza E. Jones 12/21/65 in Dekalb Co. Eliza died 5/28/28 in Dekalb Co. White Samuel C.C., Pvt., Enlisted 7/20/63, Savannah, Detached at Read Bluff, SC 2/64, Present 11/12/64. White Thomas A. PR Widow Annie applied 1/5/20 Thomas Co. She had been a resident of GA all her life. Married Newton Co. (now Rockdale Co.) 12/20/66. He died 10/1/19 Thomasville, GA. Enlisted 7/63 at Oxford, GA. He was at Point Lookout POW camp at the time of the surrender. Witness W.W. Evans stated that both he and White were present at the surrender. (Memories may fade after 55 years) The Confederate Veteran confirms capture at Fort Stedman, and further states that White was born in Putnam Co. 5/18/48, and that he enlisted at age 16. He was a Baptist Minister after the war, serving churches in Thomas and Brooks Counties. Goza 10/24/63 states that Wilder was age 40, born Monroe County GA, Blue eyes, fair complexion, light hair, 5'10". And that he needs to vist sick family in LaGrange, GA. PR Applied Chattooga Co 11/6/99. Born GA 1/8/25, married Mary Ann Johnson Troup Co 4/8/52, died Chattooga Co 1/29/07. Mary Applied Chattooga Co 6/15/07. Witness Eli Walston states that Wilder was taken sick and carried to hospital in NC, that he never saw him again, and that he was a good soldier. E.F. Wilder stated that he lived with Mitchel Wilder and had known him since 1877.(Son?) Mitchel swore 11/11/01 that command was at Thunderbolt or Camp Bnner? below Savannah, GA, and left there to go to VA. I was sick and they left me in Columbia, SC in the hospital. I remained there 6 weeks. I never got a furlough, but got a discharge from the hospital to go home. I relapsed after I got home and never got to go back to the command. PR Widow applied Dekalb Co. 11/9/10. She was a resident of GA since 5/20/34. John T. Willingham married Barbara H. Hadden 12/18/56 in Dekalb Co. She owned a home at Stone Mountain. Witness's W.P. Brown and N.M. Langford state that Willingham was home on furlough at surrender. He left command at Charlotte, NC by authority of doctors and officers. He was not able to return. Several members of company were stricken with sickness at Charlotte, NC in 9/64. Willingham would have been Capt. if he could have returned. Willingham died 6/9/86 at Stone Mountain, GA. Woodruff applied Cobb Co. 1/13/96. They married Cobb Co. 3/10/64. She had been a resident of Cobb Co. since birth, 1/20/46. He died 8/25/94 in Cobb Co. She stated that her husband was a member of the 7th GA, and that he was shot 10/1/64 in the charge on Fort Harrison in VA. He was shot in the left Hip and the ball came out the right Hip, fracturing bones and almost killing him. He suffered from the wound until his death which was caused by the wound. Witness' H.B. Wynn married Lucrecia C. Green 2/4/68. She had been a resident of GA since 1845, all her life. J.N. Wynn died 1/17/96 in Gwinnett Co. She stated that J.N. was present at the surrender. Witness P. F. Atkinson of Gwinnett came home on furlough 10/64, Witness J.I. Green enlisted 9/62 and left command after being wounded at Cedar Creek, and that J.N. Wynn was a good soldier and that he was with the company when J.I. joined and still with it when he left the day after the Cedar Creek Battle. Lucrecia died 12/29/28 in Fulton Co. where funeral expense was applied for. John Nuton Wynn 2/5/33 - 1/17/96 buried Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gwinnett Co. Wynn Robert G., Pvt., Enlisted 4/23/62, Stone Mountain, Teamster, With section in FL 2/64, Present 8/31/64, 11/1/64 listed as deserted. 1850 Census list Robert G. He was born Gwinnett Co. 9/38, she was born 7/8/37 in Gwinnett. Co. R.G. Wynn died 11/2/89 in Gwinnett Co. She stated that her husband was detailed home to gather recruits 9/64, was cut off and could not get back to the command. She lives with her son, and is supported by help of children. Witness J.I. Green of Gwinnett Co. stated that he had known Sarah Wynn all her life, and that he, Green was at home wounded at the time of the surrender, and had been with Wynn when he was detailed and sent home to recruit.
