It seems that early in 1877, Miss Victoria Norris, who was then living with a Mr. James Jolly, disappeared, and upon inquiry, letters were shown by Mr. Jolly to the effect that she had gone to Decatur, and from thence to Madison. Nothing more was thought of the matter until just recently, when by some means Jolly taken the idea into his head that he would emigrate to Mississippi, he having stolen some cotton; a few days before leaving he burned a brush heap and in the debris afteswards (sic) there was found locks and bands belonging to a trunk, and some other articles which led some to believe that they belonged to Miss Norris. This gradually worked up a sensation which resulted in the bringing backing of Jolly from Mississippi and lodging him in jail. Since his arrival he has shown the place where she was buried, and the body has been unearthed and evidences gone to prove that it was that of Miss Norris' that was lain there. This is indeed a most horrible affair. For no doubt after debauching the spotless virtue of Miss Norris he taken (sic) her life in order that no trace of crime might be elucidated from her. Such scoundrels need to have the most rigid justice meted out to them. The gallows is too light.
