IN MEMORIAM At an informal meeting of the members of Battery "E," 9th Georgia" Battalion of Artillery of the late Confederate States army, now living in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, we, the committee appointed to draft a suitable statement commemorative of the acknowledged virtue of our late comrade James T. Burns, who died at his home in DeKalb county, Georgia, on the 19th day of October, 1876, submit the following: We deeply deplore the fact that an All-wise Providence has seen fit to remove from our midst our late companion in arms, James T. Burns, while in the very prime of life. That while we regret to give the society and companionship of one so noble, generous and brave, we hope and believe that his spirit has taken its flight to that bright land where the "wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest." Burns was a noble soldier and a brave and good man. He held the responsible and dangerous position of "Gunner" in his Battery, and was always equal to the trust reposed in him. No one ever spoke of him but in terms of praise for his many virtues. Burns never gave cause for an unkind thought or deed, and it gives us, his comrades, pleasure to testify to his high character and true nobility. We recommend that this statement be published in The Atlanta Constitution, and that a copy of the paper containing it be sent to the family of our deceased companion. B. F. Wyly, W. J.
