She died February 10, 1988 in Ocean Springs, MS. Myrtice was the third daughter of five girls and one boy born of Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) Harpe and Rufus Robertson. When she was a young girl just out of high school, she met Ernest Cross at church. They courted and married. Myrtice was a loving, hard-working mother who was a marvel at keeping the household of four children and husband running smoothly. She insisted that each child get a solid education and often sacrificed herself to ensure that they had every opportunity. During the early 1920's she traveled to Miami, Florida via the Old National Highway. She traveled with her mother and father in an automobile over dirt paths from Georgia to Miami. They passed through the Indian River area of Florida and enjoyed the fresh citrus fruit and exotic birds. She remember vividly the devastation done by the hurricane of 1928 when she and her parents went to bring her sister, Lessie home. During World War II, her oldest son, Robert Harold, volunteered for service in the Navy. She was saddened that he chose to go, but as was her custom, and knowing that he knew what he was doing, she gave him her complete love and support. To do her part, she got a job at the Wellston Air Depot production facility (later Warner Robins Air Force Base) and worked there for the remainder of the war. After the war she returned to the home. Then after a few years when the children were all grown up, she returned to the facility where she worked until she suffered a severe stroke. Her recovery was long but eventually complete. In 1948, Myrtice, along with one of the teachers, Miss Fox, chaperoned the senior class of Pinehurst High School to New Orleans, LA. It was her son's Ernest, senior class. Myrtice would frequently travelled to the different states that her children and grandchildren lived at to visit them. Myrtice Robertson Cross was an avid gardener and frequently worked the family farm. She was known for her amazing success with plants and her vegetable garden. She would place one seed in each hole and somehow managed to achieve one plant for each seed. Myrtice was a strong, Christian woman. She was deeply religious and had strong moral values. She had an open mind, sympathetic ear, and comforting presence. And what a marvelous cook she was! It seemed Myrtice knew how to cook everything. All members of the extended family always wanted to come to their house for one of her Sunday meals. Myrtice and Ernest moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi and enjoyed their later years with their daughter, Sadie. Nearly four years after her husband, Ernest’s death, she became terminally ill with pancreatic cancer and passed away in the hospital in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Her two sons and her daughter, Sadie, were with her at her death. She was buried with her husband, next to the gravesite of her sister, Agnes and her husband, Clinton Heath, at Harmony Church Cemetery, Dooly County. Myrtice Robertson and Ernest Franklin Cross had the following children: 1. Robert Harold Cross was born February 25, 1927 in Dooly County Georgia. 2. Sadie Elizabeth Cross was born March 16, 1925 in GA. 3. Joyce Marcel Cross was born October 3, 1928 in Dooly County Georgia. She died November 3, 2000 in Dooly County Georgia. 4.
