Turner Sumpter County Volunteers, in the Georgia regiment of Volunteers commanded by Gen. Henry R. Jackson in the war with Mexico; That my said husband enlisted at ________________ on or about the 21 day of ___________, A.D. _______, for the term of ____________; That I was married under my name of Elizabeth Bryan to my said husband, by Rev. John Wade on or about the 27th day of August, A.D. 1848 at near Marshallville, Macon County, in the State of Georgia, and lived with my said husband from the date of my said marriage until the day of his death, to wit: the 31st day of August, A.D. 1875, when my said husband died near Snow in the State of Georgia, and that I have not since remarried; That there was never any legal impediment to said marriage. Deponents further say that Mrs. E. L. Griggs is compelled to labor on the farm part of the time for her living. Deponents further say that Mrs. E. L. Griggs who being sworn says that to the best of her recollection her husband Richard Griggs was about 5ft 10in in height was born in 1825 she is not certain but thinks he was born in Bibb County GA. Fair complected, dark hair and grayish eyes, his occupation was that of workman and farmer. He went in a company called the Sumpter [sic] County Volunteers made up of soldiers from Macon County and Sumpter [sic] County and they went to Columbus GA to organize and that the said Richard Griggs held the position of musician. Don't know the dates of enlistment nor discharge nor the place of discharge, He rendered no other service that she knows of. She sends a paper bearing his signature being a shop account. Bachelder (illeg.) a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Lalia Griggs, who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: My name is Lalia Griggs, I am over 21 years old, occupation housewife and my post office address is Unadilla, Dooly Co., Ga. I am the grand daughter of Elizabeth L. Griggs, who was a pensioner of the United States. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Morris, in Ashburn, GA., on the 17 day of May 1912. I saw her after she died and attended her funeral. She left no minor children. I have heard the foregoing statement & read understood your questions and my answers are correctly recorded therein.
