G. Arnold, a young white man employed on Calhoun's farm, who was found dead in his room with a pistol bullet through the head. The coroner's jury reported the death as suicide but two days following Arnold's death, Calhoun, it is said, presented for payment an insurance policy on Arnold's life for $1,000, which had been assigned to him by Arnold. Arnold's relatives had the body exhumed and an autopsy performed with the result that Calhoun was arrested.
