DOOLY COUNTY, May 8th, 1847. MESSRS. EDITORS—I have only time to say that our Court House, together with all the Records of the Superior and Inferior Courts and Court of Ordinary, was destroyed yesterday by fire. Only two books, I think, were saved, and they not of much value. It is also alledged that some $11,000 deposited in the Clerk’s office a day or two before was likewise consumed—in a horn. There is much mystery about the whole matter. The general belief here is that it was the work of an incendiary, and suspicions are rife. Only a few however, are suspected, and the citizens seem resolved to ferret out the rascals. I am truly sorry for the occurrence, as it will in the eyes of many, be a stain upon the county. Dooly is improving—we are getting a wealthy, industrious, and respectable population in some parts of the county, in place of the men who are fast taking refuge in the dark corners of Dale, Henry and other counties of Alabama. We are pleased with your paper, and as it gives us much the latest news, its circulation must greatly increase in this county. Yours, D.
