ONCE PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN OF VIENNA PASSES AWAY TUESDAY. -------------------------------------------- James J. Lashley, one of Vienns' oldest and most highly esteemmed citizens, died at his home Tuesday afternoon at 1:26 o'clock. He passed his ninetieth birthday on September 20, and had remained active until three years ago when he suffered a stroke of paralyais which forced him into comparative retirement. He had been in a failing condition for the past two weeks, and death came to himquitely as he was sitting in his chair by the fire Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Lashley, a native of South Carolina, had been prominently identified with the business, civic and religious life of Vienna for the past 52 years. He was at one time a successful merchant, later engaging in cotton buying, farming and other enterprises. He served the city of Vienna as mayor for several years, and at all times evidenced deep interest in the civic progress of the community. A staunch Christian, he remained active in the affairs of the Vienna Baptist church, of which he was a member as long as his health permitted. He served the church in many capacities, he and his wife being the first teachers in the Sunday school when it was organized. Many of the leaders in the church today were taught in their childhood by Mr. Lashley, graduating into adult department and benefitting by the instruction of this deeply religious man. He also served as a deacon in the church for many years. Funeral services were helld at the Baptist Church Wednesday aftrnoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. R. K. Harvey conducted the final rites. Two favorite Hymns "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," were sung by Mrs. G. S. Haslam, Mrs. J. N. Hargrove, Mrs. R. C. Akin, J. W. Hogsett and H. A. Peavy. Mrs. Grant Roberts played the piano accompaniments. Pallbearers were J. B. Walton, J. N. Hargrove, J. R. Causey, G. E. Morgan and J.M. Whitehead. Committal services were at the graveside in the City cemetery. Akin Funeral home had charge of arrangements. Surviving are three sons, C. T. Lashley, Vienna, F. E. Lashley, Homosassa, Fla., J. L. Lashley, Cordele; two granddaughters, Miss Josephine Lashley and Miss Gwendolyn Lashley, of Vienna, and several other grandchildren. Among the out-of-town attendants joining in paying last tribute at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Mims, S. M. Phillips, Hawkinsville, Mrs. W. T. Westbrook, Harold Bridges, Unadilla Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Whitehead, Pinehurst, Mrs. W. C. McKenzie, Mrs L. O. Wooten, Mrs. H. T. Smith, Mrs. Bill Sanders, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Jennings, J.
