Mitchell enlisted in Captain Jesse Smith's Regiment of the Georgia Infantry on October 15th, 1835. He was given an honorable discharge in Columbus, Ga on August 1st, 1836. At the time of his Invalid Pension application Mitchell was 71 years old and he was living in the 6th District of Dooly County. His application states that on June 15th, 1836 while building breast works out of pine trees one of them fell and threw his right arm under a log and jerked it out of place and broke it near the elbow and his right arm is now much shorter than the left one.
