This is a picture of James Horton Cross and his family. It was taken in Dooly 
County sometime in the mid 1890’s. Below is a key to the picture.  

Back Row L-R: 1.James Lewis Cross, 2.Annie Cross, 3.Hugh Green Cross, 4.Henry 
Cross, 5.Mary Cross 

Front Row L-R: 6.Sarah Altman, 7.James H. Cross, 8.Dicey Ann Cross, 9.Mary Lou 
Jean Altman (she is pregnant).

Here is some info on the people in the picture
 

1 James L Cross is the son of James Horton Cross. He married Sarah Altman, 
daughter of David Altman and Elizabeth Thombley. 

2. Annie Cross is the daughter of James H Cross and Dicey Adams Cross. 

3. Hugh Green Cross is the son of James Horton Cross and Dicey Adams Cross. 
Hugh married Mary Lou Jeanne Altman on Dec 12th, 1895. Mary Lou Jeanne Altman 
is the daughter of David Altman and Elizabeth Thombley Altman. 

4. Henry Cross is the son of James Horton Cross and Dicey Adams Cross. 

5. Mary Cross is the daughter of James Horton Cross and Dicey Adams Cross.

6. Sarah Altman is the daughter of David Altman and Elizabeth Thombley Altman. 
Sarah is the sister of Jessie Roy Altman. Sarah married James L Cross. Sarah’s 
brother Jessie Roy married James’s cousin Fannie Cross. 

7. James Horton Cross is the son of James Cross. He is also the brother of 
William David Cross. William David Cross is the father of Fannie Cross. 

8. Dicey Adams Cross is the daughter of John Adams and Martha Montford Adams. 
Dicey is also the sister of Laura Adams. Laura Adams is the mother of Fannie 
Cross. 

9. Mary Lou Jean Altman is the daughter of David Altman and Elizabeth Thombley 
Altman. Mary married Hugh Green Cross on Dec 12th, 1895. 
 

All of the people in this picture were founding members of Mars Hill Baptist 
Church located on Hwy. 27 East in Dooly County. They are also buried at Mars 
Hill Baptist.
